question
working alliance
answer
joining of reasonable self of the client with the therapist analysing self for the purpose of the work BOND - positive attachment, including trust acceptance and confidence (emathy, warmth, trustworthiness, unconditional positvie regaurd, genuineness) TASK- counselling behaviours interventions and cognitions that form the counselling process (specific technique) GOAL- agreed ideal outcomes and priorities. The working alliance also influences transference, mostly through its facilitation of clients' awareness and direct expression of transference-based feelings and its buffering of the relationship against the effects of negative transference. The working alliance influences and is influenced by therapist countertransference. Furthermore, the working alliance is fostered by therapists' careful monitoring of their own countertransference reactions to the client. The working alliance also influences the real relationship. The stronger the alliance, the more likely are therapy participants to express directly genuine and realistic feelings toward one another. The working alliance is more than an additive summation of the transference configuration and the real relationship. It is an attachment that exists to further the work of therapy and contains participants' role expectations regarding the work of therapy. The existence of a sound working alliance is especially important during crises in the relationship, at which times the alliance facilitates the participants' working through of those crises.
question
transference
answer
repetition of past conflicts with significant others displaced onto therapist Transference influences the working alliance, with positive transference at times serving to strengthen the alliance and negative transference serving to weaken it In the early stages of therapy, transferences toward the therapist are highly similar to the client's attitudes and perceptions of people in general and authority figures in particular. In brief therapy, the early transference that occurs must be largely positive if the work is to proceed effectively The effects of transference (both positive and negative) on process and outcome will depend on the amount of insight that accompanies the transference
question
countertransference
answer
occurs when a therapist transfers emotions to a person in therapy, is often a reaction to transference Countertransference can manifest in different ways, such as excessive self-disclosure on the part of the therapist or an inappropriate interest in irrelevant details from the life of the person in treatment. A therapist who acts on their feelings toward the person being treated or that person's situation or engages in behavior not appropriate to the treatment process may not be effectively managing countertransference.
question
genuineness
answer
ability and willingness to be what one truly is in a relationship - authentic, open and honest
question
realistic perceptions
answer
perceptions that are uncontaminated by transference distortions and other defences
question
real realtionship
answer
genuineness and realistic perceptions The more positive the therapy participants are toward one another within the context of the real relationship, the stronger will be the working alliance It is possible for the client or the therapist to be too positive toward the other, thus impeding the working alliance As the therapy relationship progresses, the real relationship deepens. Each participant holds a wider range of realistic perceptions of the other, and each is able to be more fully genuine.
