The death penalty is one of the big issues today. It was very common practice in many countries many years ago. According to a research of Amnesty International, 140 countries have abolished the death penalty in 2011. Compare to the national idea, Yasuo Fukuda who was the 58th Prime Minister of Japan, serving from 2007 to 2008 said “In Japan, the majority view is that capital punishment should be maintained, so I feel no need to change what we have continued doing until now. ” However, it should be changed in Japan.
There are three reasons of why death penalty should be abolished are unchangeable of the number of murder, high cost of death warrant, and importance of life. Unchangeable of the number of murder is one of the reasons why death penalty should be abolished. It is seem like countries with death penalty have lower rate of murder. However, a research by the FBI showed that “the murder rate in non-death penalty states has remained consistently lower than the rate in states with the death penalty during decade”.
As you can see from the research, death penalty does not change thoughts of people who will murder. As a result, it should be abolished. Another reason is high cost of death warrant. Death penalty costs more than keeping murders in prison. A study the Sacramento Bee in 1988 suggested that California would save 90 million dollars a year if it abolished the death penalty (The High Cost of the Death Penalty).
There are some comments that the money comes from nation’s tax; therefore the government should not take a large amount of money of murders. Importance of life is one of the reasons why death penalty should be abolished. According to the research of the FBI, murder of non-death penalty states have lower rate because people who live in there have an idea that life is very important to keep, so the number of murder decreased.
Also, death penalty does not mean losing the sin. People can atone their sin by nowing what they have done was wrong and getting back on the right track again. The sin cannot be erased, but it helps people more than death penalty around the murders and the victims such as families. Japanese government still continue death penalty, however there are so many advantages to stop death penalty; it is unchangeable of the number of murder, high cost of death warrant, and importance of life. If Japan stopped it, they will get lower murder rate in the future.
