Chapter 10.1-Psychology- Becoming an adult

-Some cultures call rituals marking adulthood the rites of passage. (this is usually religious) -Role transitions assume new responsibilities and duties. Such as voting, completing ed, full time employment, etc.

a period when individuals are not adolescents but are not yet fully adults.

Students known as returning adult students are over age 25. These students tend to be more motivated than those who entered college directly from high school, they also have many other positive characteristics.

-During young adulthood, there is a drop in the frequency of risky behaviors.

the desire to live life more on the edge through physically and emotionally threatening situations that are on the boundary between life and death.

Intimacy vs. isolation- some have intimacy issues because they do not have their identity yet.

-young people who do not go to college become financially independent sooner -living on ones own accelerates the process of becoming an independent adult -can be achieved through a part time job, joining the military, or going to college and then entering the workforce.

causes fatty deposits to accumulate in arteries, impeding blood flow.

they help keep arteries clear and break down low-density lipoproteins.
