The film depicts a joint Indian family consisting of three generations, with shifting value systems. Shivnath Sharma, a retired post master and head of the family, possess a box of family treasure and jewellery which his sons are interested in acquiring. The four sons include Ramnath, Harinath, Kashinath, and Bishwanath. Ramnath Sharma works as head clerk and is near retirement. His wife Rita frequently complains about physical pain and discomfort. Their daughter Mita has completed her studies and focused on dance. Harinath Sharma and his wife unfortunately passed away in an accident, leaving their daughter Krishna, a diligent and respectful student interested in both studies and dance behind as Harinath's brother Kashinath taught at a school with his wife Shobhna wishing to move elsewhere with her spouse and child. Vishwanath is a young music director while Arun Kuma
...r provides tutelage to Krishna. The film opens with the domestic help fleeing from the house due to excessive workload, resulting in pandemonium within the household. Shivnath is upset over not receiving his morning tea while the daughter-in-law's dread performing household duties. Arguments ensue between the brothers concerning grocery responsibilities, leading to them being late for work.
Ramnath receives a reprimand and a warning of being fired from work. Meanwhile, Krishna diligently carries out household chores for everyone. The members of the household adopt a self-centered approach to life, solely focused on their own work and pleasures. No one takes responsibility for anyone else, and each member eyes the others with suspicion. Mita enjoys life carelessly by attending parties and dancing, while Vishwanath devotes himself to music and cooking food in his own room. Kashinath an
his wife, driven by greed for gold jewelry, are reluctant to leave the house. Rita and Shobhna keep shifting the blame to each other, and the old man complains about changing values where elders are not respected. The household members also fail to acknowledge others' pain or difficulties, except for Krishna, who sacrifices her own interests for others.
The atmosphere in the house is tense, with an underlying cloud of negativity until Raghu, a multi-talented and cheerful cook, enters the scene. The family members harbor suspicion towards Raghu because he agrees to work for low wages despite his high skill level. Nevertheless, Raghu wins their hearts with his culinary skills and brings about a change in attitude within the household by encouraging small activities like eating and drinking together.
Through the use of storytelling and indirect references in an unassuming way, Raghu teaches the important values of respecting each other and thoughtfulness to the family members. He gains their confidence by taking an interest in each of their lives, making Ramnath happy with evening drinks and snacks, and interacting with each member in their preferred language. Despite their position in the house, Raghu respects everyone.
Krishna finally finds a friend in Raghu, who also takes care of Shivnath Singh and revives his self-confidence. He helps Vishwanath by composing a tune for him and aims to bring the family together by praising Vishwanath in front of his father, reminding the brothers Ramnath and Kashinath of their childhood, and telling Shivnath that his daughter-in-law has instructed him to take good care of him.
Thanks to Raghu, Ramnath has become punctual at
work and received an extension and raise. The issue of alcohol consumption at home is no longer a point of contention between the brothers, and Rita and Shobhna have developed a bond.
Mita learned the value of humility and relationships while previously preoccupied with herself. Krishna, once considered a doormat, gained importance by winning a dance competition after being trained by Raghu. Now, the household is transformed into a happy and peaceful place where all members are thoughtful towards each other, with their individual aspirations intertwined in one common thread. The change involving individuals is complex and cannot be attained by mere procedures and processes, but a solid crafting strategy must be in place to achieve it. A vision for change is essential, which Raghu had in mind to recreate the magic of bonding and love among the family members. A leader is needed to spearhead the change at all levels, which Raghu consistently worked towards. Although Krishna shared the same dream as Raghu, she could not initiate and manage the process of change alone. For change to happen, it must be relevant for all members and lead to significant effects. If not, members will not be included in the process while being aware of the good and bad but unable to understand the big picture. In Shanti Niwas, the basic needs of every member were not being met, causing issues such as Shivnath missing meals and his sons being late for work. Krishna was unable to pursue her passion for dance because no one recognized its importance. Raghu recognized the need for change that involved all members and aimed to inspire them through a common
vision. He encouraged Mita to value humility, telling her that "only a good human being can become a great artist." Raghu believed that incremental efforts could lead to dramatic change and set out to make small changes in the family's attitude. By encouraging activities such as eating and drinking together, Raghu successfully fostered greater family bonding. To ensure success, Raghu recognized that communication strategies had to be tailored to each individual's interests and level of maturity. He successfully sparked change in Kashinath through knowledge and attracted Vishwanath through music. Raghu's practical approach, including leading by example and doing more than what he was paid for, effectively communicated the virtues of thoughtfulness. Finally, Raghu's efficiency at household chores had a rippling effect on other aspects of family life, such as helping Ramnath get to work on time and promoting a productive atmosphere at home.
Despite not intending for change, Raghu received an extension and raise with greater effects. For me, the complex phenomenon of human emotions and relationships is intriguing. I particularly appreciated the portrayal of changing relationships in the movie.
