The text "Dougy" by James Moloney captures the interest of young readers due to its exploration of themes such as Family Support, Racial Conflict, Racial Discrimination, and Determination, all of which are prevalent in today's society. One significant theme in the book is the portrayal of strong family support. Dougy and Gracey come from a close-knit family and always stand by each other. An illustrative instance of this is when Gracey goes to Brisbane and her family supports her by participating in a run. "Mum stretched out her arm around Gracey's shoulder and hugged her close for a second. 'You won't come last, Gracey,' she said." Another demonstration of family support is shown when Dougy assists Gacey on the hall roof while they wait for a helicopter to pick her up. The quote that represents this moment i
...s "'The Moodaguddas got Gracey. He's taken her back into the water. They have to help her.'" Throughout the novel, taking care of one another is a recurring theme known as family support. Moreover, another important theme in "Dougy" is the presence of racial conflict. This conflict arises when white people consider themselves superior to Aboriginals.
An example of this is when Craig is upset with Raymond’s dad because he doesn’t pull his weight at work and Craig never gets to see his dad. “Your fathers never here and when he is he’s always drunk, he never does anything."
One more example of racial conflict is when Cooper is in the hall having an argument with Dougy, Brett, Gracey, and Tiny. The quote for this is “Johnny Warren hasn’t done a thing. None of the blokes have
Hell they haven’t” shouted Cooper.
In Dougys town, racial conflict is a daily occurrence, often escalating into war. Racial discrimination is another prevalent theme, as it is an integral part of life for the whites and blacks in the town. An incident that exemplifies this discrimination is when Dougys mum attempted to hail a taxi but faced disbelief from the driver solely based on her skin color. The driver expressed his skepticism by saying, "I want to be sure you have cash on you. Sometimes I’ve driven YOU people around and gotten no money at the end."
In the book "Dougy", there is another example of racial discrimination in Dougys town. The white people there own everything and hold higher positions, leaving no opportunities for the blacks. Dougy has to face this discrimination and learn to deal with it. Determination is a theme that is not only present in the book, but also in everyday life. A demonstration of this can be seen through Gracey's ambition to participate in the state race, despite being discouraged by white kids. Gracey chooses to ignore their remarks and continues pursuing her goal.
Another illustration is Dougy's endeavor to locate Gracey while she is in the water. "The Moodagudda has sucked her in. We have to find her." Determination manifests as a significant aspect of Dougy's character. The novel Dougy delves into various concerns pertaining to Aboriginal individuals existing in modern society, as experienced by Dougy and his family. As the novel explores themes like racial discrimination, racial conflict, and family support, our comprehension of the Aboriginal viewpoint amplifies. Steve Jedrzejczak.
