Originally, archery served as a means of support in warfare and as a technique for hunting game.
As firearms became more prevalent and favored, archery saw a decline in usage. In the United States, English style long bows were commonly used for both hunting and competition archery. In 1911, Ishi, the final surviving member of the Yahi Indian tribe, emerged from hiding in California and was treated by Dr. Saxton Pope.
Through his association with Ishi, Pope gained knowledge and proficiency in archery, and his passion for the sport led him to spread its popularity. As a result of Pope's dedication and considerable contributions, The Pope and Young club was established in 1961 and named after Dr. Pope as acknowledgment of his unmatched enthusiasm in reviving modern primitive archery.
Today, the Pope Club is a prominent North American bow hunting conservation organization that supports responsible
...hunting and sound conservation practices. Its structure and work pattern follows that of the scientific NPO Boone and Crockett Club. In the 1920s, professional engineers became interested in archery, which was previously an exclusive pursuit for traditional experts. These engineers contributed the compound bow and modern recurve to the sport.
In modern western archery, it is uncommon to see primitive bows designed in traditional ways. However, in the 1980s, American enthusiasts merged traditional archery techniques with scientific principles to rejuvenate the practice, as documented in the Traditional Bowyer's Bible. Fred Bear, an American archer and bow producer, is recognized as instrumental in modern game archery. Bow hunting is the utilization of archery skills to hunt game animals.
Bow hunting demands considerable hunting expertise and intelligence, as it doesn't involve firearms. A number of
countries have authorized the use of bows for hunting both small and large game. Hunters also avail of extended hunting periods for the likes of black powder, rifle, shotgun and other smaller forms of hunting. Compound bows are the preferred choice for longer hunting seasons.
Enhancements like fibre optical sights are commonly added to archery equipment. Target archery and modern competitive archery are the most renowned types of archery globally, with target archery involving shooting arrows at a fixed target from a particular distance or distances, while field archery entails shooting at differently marked or fixed targets in a wooded area. Although field archery is especially well-liked in Europe and America, there are additional lesser-known and more historical forms of archery.
Furthermore, there exist various archery games that are considered as novelties. The regulations for these competitions are determined by the organisers, although typically FITA guidelines are followed. It should be noted that several major archery organisations operate independently of FITA and have their own unique set of rules.
