Stress is defined as the physical and emotional body strain which is caused by both bad and good experiences especially in response to outside pressure. The common observable stress reaction to an individual includes irritability, tension, fast heartbeat, lack of concentration and headache. Stress can result from different places for a short period of time or long-time.

This results to acute and chronic stress respectively which has different treatment ways and symptoms. There are some distinguishing features between acute and chronic stress.Acute stress is usually short-lived and to some extent has benefits especially on students working assignment on deadline. Acute stress is treated through relaxation and rest or the use of anti-anxiety medicines. On the other hand, distress is a negative type of stress with the following characteristics; causes anxiety, makes an individual feel unpleasant, decreases performance, is long-term, and results to both physical and mental problems.This means that stress has both negative and positive implications. The human body reacts to stress by releasing chemicals into blood once it senses danger.

A person with excess stress is noticeable through certain behavioral symptoms such as isolation from others, tension, eating less or more, nail biting, drug abuse, dizziness, low concentration level and anxiety.The general causes of work place stress as per demand control model include pressure of prolonged working hours, fear of layoff, pressure to perform as per expectations of the management without increase in job satisfaction and overtime job as a result of staff cutbacks. The general causes of stress according to the effort-reward imbalance model include high demands at work accompanied by low job control, hard work without promotion and surrounding labor market conditions.

Creation of high –involvement workplace according to demand-control model has the implication of creating more stress as workers are expected to give more without gain. In the case of effort-reward imbalance model it has an implication of health complications such as cardiovascular disease. Most common workplace stressors include working in pathetic environments, exposure to complex matters for long time, serving highly needy clients, dealing with managers, relying on a team, lack of job security and workload.Employees in organization experience most stress as they are expected to meet certain targets, exposed to poor working conditions and stress of meeting deadlines. Management of excess stress can be done through exercise, relaxation, and sleep, avoiding unnecessary stress, proper management of time, acquisition of good organizational skills and changing the way an individual sees the situation leading to stress.

Workplace stress has specific effects on individuals and organization such as poor performance which results to low profitability.Workplace stress results to health complications on employees, who in turn perform poorly, generate conflicts among coworkers and quit jobs. Managers

in an organization are entitled to create a stress free workplace through observation of the following; improving communication, offering rewards and incentives to employees, consulting with employees, and providing a friendly social climate. Through management of workplace stress, managers improve on performance and changes the way in which employees interact with customers and coworkers.
