My identity was formed by New York City, not a singular moment. The cultural hub immediately captivated me and each neighborhood has its own significance to me. I have developed an appreciation for the East Village's edgy charm, Midtown's lively atmosphere, and the Upper East Side's sophistication. There is always something new to discover in this city - dusty bookstores to explore, Ray's Pizza to indulge in, and Brooklyn telephone wires adorned with worn sneakers that I cannot help but love.
Even though I had visited New York multiple times in the past, it wasn't until I spent a week at Barnard College that the city truly resonated with me. During my stay, I enrolled in a writing course called "Art of Attention" which focused on using the city as inspiration. Throughout my time there, I ve
...ntured to different areas such as West Village's Hungarian bakery and Bryant Park where I spent one morning. Furthermore, I sat on a concrete island in the middle of an intersection and simply listened to the sounds around me. The City's multitude of languages, tales, and car horns never failed to astound me. These experiences brought about visible changes within myself; exhibiting confidence by holding my head high and wearing whatever pleased me.
Feeling accepted and at ease in the City enabled me to overcome my fear of judgment, embrace my individuality, and feel valued. This revelation was momentous for me when I returned to my small hometown where I faced no scrutiny. It allowed me to be comfortable with who I am and let go of the anxiety that previously hindered me. As a result, I can now dress a
I please without concern for others' opinions, openly express myself without fear of opposition, and write content without being overly self-critical.
My soul was uncovered from under the judgment and criticism of my hometown peers, allowing me to become who I was meant to be. Despite personal and family issues over the past two years, I am grateful for having fallen because it helped me persevere through them.
