Soft money supporters approved of paper money and were made up of mostly bankers and allies to bankers. Hard money supporters believed in coinage only, and rejected all banks that issued paper money (including the national bank). Soft money advocates were progressive, believing in economic growth and bank speculation, while the hard money advocates were against expansion and bank speculation. Jackson was a hard-money advocate. The hard-money and soft-money sides clashed in the bank wars.

Secretary of treasury, hired by Jackson. Was ordered by Jackson to destroy the \"monster\" -the national bank. Took Federal money out of the bank and placed it into state banks. Helped to cause eventual crash of National Bank.

in 1837, Taney ruled in this court case that interests of the community are more important than the interests of business. Court case was brought about by one company with a long-standing charter for a toll bridge that would lose business to another company that just received a charter to construct a bridge that would be toll free.

A movement in 1826 against the masons after the former mason William Morgan disappeared shortly before the was set to publish a \"tell all\" book on the masons. Many suspected the masons had kidnapped him to prevent the revealing of their secrets. Whigs used this movement to gain popularity for themselves, launching attacks on President Jackson and Van Buren, both of whom were masons.

Although Henry Clay was supported by many for the \"American System,\" he never won the presidency in the three times he ran.

While Daniel Webster did have much support from the Whigs and a wonderful talent for giving speeches, his penchant for alcohol and reliance on the rich for support prevented him from winning the presidency.

Economic downturn that resulted in a 5 year depression caused by loose lending practices of state banks and overspeculation. Martin Van Buren spent most of his time in office attempting to stablize and lessen the economic situation.

issued by President Jackson July 11, 1836, was meant to stop land speculation caused by states printing paper money without proper specie (gold or silver) backing it. It required that the purchase of public lands be paid for in specie. It stopped the land speculation and the sale of public lands went down sharply. The panic of 1837 followed.

Van Buren comes up with this system. Anytime the government sells land, the money earned will be put into in the Independent Treasury.

The name given to William Henry Harrison's campaign for the presidency in 1840, symbolized that Harrison was a common man who liked log cabins and hard cider, even though he was elite. William Henry Harrison was the presidential candidate for the Whig party.

New, cheap newspapers, sold for only pennies. Acheived mass working-class audience. 1st penny press was the New York Sun.

John Tyler came to the Presidency after William Henry Harrison passed.Was former democrat, but left the party due to Jackson's extreme program. Refused to recharter the Bank of the US. Every one of his cabinet members left him.

Both of these ships were involved with the British. The Caroline was used by anti-Bristish Canadians for supplies. The British attacked the ship, killing an American in the process.The Creole was a slave ship where the slaves rebelled and took over. When the Creole under the control of the slaves went to the Bahamas, the British declared those slaves free. Both of these actions by the British enraged Americans

A violent fight between American and Canadian lumberjacks caused by territory disputes in the Aroostook river area.

Gave the US a little more than half of the disputed territory and made the US and Canada agree to the revised border between Canada and US that extended almost to the Rockies.
