Argument Essay Terms

a multiparagraph piece of writing that argues a specific point; main point is discussed with evidence and elaboration on the evidence

the paragraph that opens the essay; includes the hook/lead, background or connecting information and the argument/thesis statement; organization of ideas goes from broad to specific (upside down triangle)

in an essay, the hook/lead engages the reader's interest in your subject; usually at the beginning of the introduction; sets the tone for your paragraph or essay; should be well- developed and transition smoothly to background information and the argument/thesis
