Plutarch

Parallel Lives. Plutarch wrote a biography on Alexander the Great. Plutarch called his books Parallel Lives since he would compare one famous Greek man to one famous Roman man.

Documentation. We actually have pretty thorough documentations on Alexander the Great and this allows us to understand his role in society including his personality and how he impacted culture.

Aristotle

Aristotle served as attacher for Alexander, teaching him many things. Aristotle was the person who gave Alexander his copy of the Iliad. Alexander treasured this book because he saw it as a valuable piece of military knowledge. Among the most important things Aristotle taught him was how to practice medicine. Once Alexander himself became a general himself this knowledge became very handy. One of the main reasons why him being able to practice medicine was so important is because it allowed him to gain popularity with his soldiers and made his soldiers very faithful to him.

Aristotle gave it to him, he thought it was valuable because it had a lot of military knowledge.

The story of his horse: Alexander was very smart and courageous another contributing factor. An example of his intelligence and bravery can be seen in the story of Alexander's horse. Alexander's horse was very important to him. When Alexander was a boy he tamed a horse that no one else could. He figured out that why the horse couldn't be tamed was because the horse was afraid of its own shadow. When his horse eventually died he built a city around the buried horse.

Persia

. He wanted to do this because Ancient Greece and Ancient Persia were ancient enemies, always fighting against each other. He believed that if he could create a huge empire through conquering them both it would be very powerful since all the people that used to fight against each other would become subjects to his kingdom.

During the battle in Persia, Alexander fought against the Persian King Darius. When Alexander won Darius fled even though Alexander wanted him to be a mentor but a traitor in the Persian army beheaded the king. When the traitor came to Alexander with his head Alexander was very upset because he had other plans. He wanted to seem like a noble king, a lawful king so he cut the head off of this traitor.

Alexander was very motivated in his quest to conquer the world and believed that sleep and sex made him mortal something he was trying to avoid.

After naming the city of Alexandria after himself, the priest their consider Alexander to be the son of the god Ammon.

Once Alexander believed in his immortality he acted differently and made his army resent him. Also his army was so tired with his never ending requests and had no interest in marching for months and foreign countries and climates.

The worst moment of Alexander's life was when he realized that he was not going to be able to prove to himself that he was immortal. This moment led to his death. According to Plutarch he drank all day and was attacked with a fever so he took a cold bath, drank again but still had a fever. Due to his high fever he was attacked with thirst and continued to drink wine. This led to him falling upon a delirium, and then dying. He was 33 and very young.

Even though his death was tragic he left behind him a huge impact on culture. Alexander the Great is hugely influential because he brought the Greek language to many places like India and Egypt. This period came to be known as the Helena era. Due to Alexander the Great spreading Greek when one wants to search for Ancient Greek texts it is better to go digging in Egypt where the papyrus is well conserved due to the dry climate. Since Egypt became a Hellenistic kingdom there are many Greek texts present. The word Hellenistic comes from the word Hellas which means Greece. Also along with this impact after his death his empire that he had created was divided among his generals. This happened so that no huge empire like his existed afterwards, since it was split into pieces. The places he conquered became much more interesting because they had a lot of diverse culture. With different types of cultures they became much more unique. It became a much more multicultural world but in some ways because of this it also became a less patriotic world. It became a less patriotic world because people had several cultures surrounding them and that they were a part of so they became confused which one culture they affiliated with the most. When he died he became a hero subject of a romance, a novel etc.

In egypt where the papyrus is well conserved due to the dry climate and since egypt became a hellenistic king down there are many greek texts there.

The Helena area, areas that were influenced by Alexander the great came to be known as hellenistic kingdoms.

Interesting. They became much more interesting because they had a lot of diverse culture now. With different types of cultures the places became much more unique. It also became a more multicultural world due to Alexander the Great. However, It also became a lot less patriotic world. It became a lot less patriotic because people had multiple cultures surrounding them and did not know which one they strongly affiliated with so they became confused.

Because people became so much more diverse culturally it was hard to understand where they came from and which culture they affiliated with the most
