Within the play, Vladimir and Estrogon are situated in an isolated location where we encounter them waiting for the arrival of a person named Godot. The characters engage in dialogue regarding their anticipation of an individual whom they have never encountered, and ultimately remain uncertain of his attendance. As they wait, a peculiar man, Pozzo, enters along with his slave, Lucky. The character Lucky is depicted as being voiceless and subsequently silenced whenever attempting to communicate with the others present.
According to Estrogon and Vladimir, they aren't from this area, and it's unclear why Pozzo and Lucky are there. Vladimir is always attempting to depart from the barren wasteland, yet never seems to actually do so. They seem to be stuck in a despairing situation, waiting for an unfamiliar individual while also fearing that they may miss him if they leave
.... Furthermore, it's depressing that Vladimir is a pessimistic character who remains in a desolate area with only Pozzo, Lucky, and a tree for company despite his desire to depart. Despite being viewed as tragic figures, Vladimir and Estrogon exhibit clownish and humorous behavior.
The fact that individuals who utilize body language as a means to convey humor may actually possess traits of desperation and sadness is somewhat ironic. One significant aspect of the play implies that Estrogon and Vladimir lack the determination to depart, preferring to simply discuss leaving rather than taking action. This illustrates their feeble-mindedness and fear of missing Godot's arrival. Although we are not privy to insight into their personalities, their clown-like behaviors offer a hint about who they are. The enigma surrounding their character adds to the dilemma of why they wait
for Godot and who he may be.
During the workshop, various explorative techniques were employed to enhance the piece. One of such techniques involved cross cutting with a split scene whereby the group split into two. On one side, Estrogon and Vladimir reenacted the events that transpired before the script while on the other side, Pozzo and Lucky acted out their events. Additionally, we developed a scene set after the scripted part where Pozzo departs and Estrogon and Vladimir confront Lucky regarding Pozzo's reliability.
Hot seating, wherein a person was singled out and questioned by others in the group, was one of the strategies utilized to gain a deeper understanding of the characters. In our group, we formulated specific queries based on the individual roles, such as asking Lucky why he allowed Pozzo to mistreat him. Additionally, we each chose a character from the script and analyzed it by annotating the corresponding lines. To improve our comprehension of the script, we swapped roles and groups during the workshop.
My character, Vladimir, was portrayed mainly through physical actions to highlight his clown-like personality. Additionally, his voice emphasized the severity of their unfavorable circumstances.
