How does the story start?
Young Gillian’s uncle dies and leaves him 1000 dollars (the uncle was super rich). When Gillian spends the money he is supposed to tell the lawyers how he spent it.
How rich was the uncle?
He was worth 1/2 a million.
How did the Uncle divide up his will?
Miss Hayden (the Uncle’s ward), the maid and the housekeeper all got a seal ring and $10 each. The nephew got $1000
What question does Gillian ask multiple people?
“What would you do with $1000 dollars?”
What does the blind pencil-selling man show him?
A checkbook with $1, 785.
What does Gillian do after he learns Ms. Hayden was left nothing?
He gives the money to Ms. Hayden
Why does it matter about how the money was spent?
if the money was spent badly, $50,000 would be given to Ms. Hayden.
Why does he tell the lawyer that he lost the money in the races?
Because he wants the money to go to Ms. Hayden.
What is irony?
The general term for literary techniques that portray differences between appearance and reality.
What is verbal irony?
words are used to suggest the opposite of what is meant
Ex: When Old Bryson says the things Gillian should do with his money on pages 277-278
What is dramatic irony?
there is a contradiction between what a character thinks and what the audience knows to be true.
Ex: When Gillian lies about how he spent the money on page 281.
What is situational irony?
An event that directly contradicts the expectation of characters, the reader or audience occurs.
Ex: When Gillian lies about how he spent the money on page 281.
What is point of view?
The perspective from which the story was told.
What is point of view in this story?
It is third person limited and we can tell because it only focus’s on Gillian’s side of the story.
What does Gillian feel about Ms. Hayden?
He loves her (page 280), but she rejected him((situational irony).
