He saves his wife's life - was able to identify the source of her pain when the doctor couldn't. Themes: Society or authority figures do not always know what is best for us.

SHORT STORY Summary: Theme: The author believes that a reverence for people of authority can blind us to their true intentions. Teachers and students. Some see innocence and strive to protect it while others long to corrupt it.

NOVEL Summary: [Finny: Had the ability to keep himself untainted by the evil of the world. A Christ figure. Fatal flaw: a certain lack of empathy (because he is so perfect).] Themes: A statement against people who say you should NOT be innocence, experience is everything.

PLAY Characters: Joe Keller, Chris Keller, Larry Keller (R.I.P), Mrs Keller, Anne, George, Steve Summary: Ann Deever was engaged to Larry, distraught when he dies while at war (everyone thinks he's MIA). Chris Keller loves her and she loves him but Mrs Keller is adamant that he'll come back. It is revealed that Joe screwed Ann's father over and sent him to prison - to keep the Keller family safe (and shipped a bunch of faulty airplane parts that possibly killed a lot of pilots). Chris is shocked. Ann reveals that Larry's death was possibly a suicide. Chris comes home and both he and Joe agree that Joe should fess up - Joe then shoots himself. Themes: Need to treat all humans as though they are your own family (pilots, Steve). Capitalistic society can sometimes drive people to be immoral and irrational.

Tragic hero is someone who is caught between heaven and earth. Isolated from other people, no one else like him so no one can appreciate what he's going through. Revolting against the status quo. Does not need to be religious. Brings a certain new unique ideology. Eg. Hercules, Prometheus, Adam

POEM Summary:A boy/man goes down to his water trough for a drink one afternoon and watches as a potentially poisonous snake peacefully hangs about and drinks water. He does nothing (and in fact admires the snake) till the snake turns to leave and then throws a log at it and regrets it immediately. Themes: People react to things they are ignorant about with fear or violence. The conflict between what we are taught by society and our internal feelings. Id/superego.

POEM Summary: Adam is grateful for Eve because she opens his eyes to the world. Argues against Eve's bad girl image. Theme: Turning gender roles on their head. A more accurate look at the modern woman. Be grateful for women with a vision! GENDER ROLES. Not stereotypes.

POEM Summary: The poem talks about cavemen roasting a mammoth, the beginning of man's ruthlessness and killing (even though we are aware of the pain caused). Theme: Humans are the worst of the worst! You should be kind - everyone suffers, and everyone is vicious. Do not willfully cause someone else suffering.

POEM Summary: The ram was the real hero in the Abraham/Isaac story. Theme: He has a hard time admiring God or Abraham in this story and the ram was the real hero - he truly saved Isaac because he ultimately paid the price, sacrificed himself for the belief systems of other people. Looks at old stories with a fresh eye, scrutinizes the story.
