The United States is a melting pot of many cultures, races and ethnicities. Have learned that each group has differences and many similarities. With these differences they have taught me to be tolerant and accepting of them. By embracing the differences through our diverse society, I have learned new concepts of living, new ways to think, and have been introduced to a variety of foods that I have enjoyed.
It seems in the end many of the groups that are so different have a common interest which is to love and be happy.
It would be beneficial to our society if we would focus on the main interest of all, ether than focusing on how different we are from one another. Focusing on the differences and judging others based on them is something that was done in the past upon realization that closing the Opportu
...nity to learn about other cultures was hindering me In life. The African American history is something that is widely and often discussed. Recently I have learned that all African Americans were not brought over to the United States from Africa to be slaves.
Some were actually immigrants that came from the Caribbean and other islands.
(Macaroni 2012) "Roughly 1 million free persons of color ivied in the North and the South, most farming small parcels of farmland, working at skilled jobs in cities, or operating small businesses. " This explains how many African American are. I believe that the America's population will be mostly immigrants, and that America will be economically thriving, and that Immigrants will dominate the government positions.
In reality cultural pluralism tends to foster resentment fro
the indigenous culture towards the new coming culture. This country needs to get rid of the entire hyphen Americans; we are one country and need to be one people. Having different ethnic groups segregating themselves creates a "salad bowl" not a melting pot.
This leads to animosity and not acceptance. This nation will not foster a climate of acceptance until people shed themselves of the old mantras of the underclass/victim class and start seeing themselves as equals.
Diversity in society helps us to grow as individuals and open our minds to different ways of life. When you become exposed to different ways to live, and see how other cultures carry on then you are no longer closed to the idea that we are all different in some way, and those differences can be meaningful in our ivies.
When it comes to diversity it also promotes more tolerance. In terms of being tolerant that means diversity can help us accept other cultures, and even adapt some of their ways into our society.
The point is, we are all different. Yet the differences that we have between us can be used to strengthen society as we know it. Diversity allows us the opportunity to learn, grow, understand new ways of living, and experience life to the fullest.
Without diversity, we are closed Off in Our own worlds. But with it, we expand our knowledge and we are no longer ignorant. When you are aware of the preferences and embrace them, then you have taken the blind fold off to living differently and you are a better person for it.
The key is exposure and using what you
learned to increase more tolerance and decrease things such as racism. I feel we can climate of acceptance and cultural pluralism in the united States by simply being civil and tolerant and respectful to one another and treating each other as we would want to be treated. I think rudeness is at all time high.
I am reading a book The Civility Solution and it has a lot of great info. Media perpetuates stereotyping and prejudice in a way that of being eased to one factions rather than the other.
Media stereotypes are inevitable, especially in the advertising, entertainment and news industries, which need as wide an audience as possible to quickly understand information. Stereotypes act like codes that give audiences a quick, common understanding of a person or group of people usually relating to their class, ethnicity or race, gender, sexual orientation, social role or occupation.
This means that media stereotypes probably fueled prejudice. The difference of each individual's perspective, when expressed through visual media, can rate a diverse cultural collective.
The goal of the Visual Media degree is to examine the media arts industry, foster appreciation of alternative communication methods, and provide the kind of scholarship that makes technological applications, critical thinking and education in the arts important and beneficial to the immediate community. A Visual Media professional communicates ideas through creative expression.
If anything, I think media first encourages tolerance of diversity by introducing us to types of people we may not normally encounter and then we are later led to a rater appreciation of said diversity.
Also, by learning about diverse cultures there, cuisine, land, and customs. We may find a
common ground or a point which we may find fascinating, leading to our appreciation of that culture. Misconceptions remain effective only when you avoid contact with those about whom you have misconceptions. It is always helpful to increase your exposure to people that belong to the group about which you have stereotyped thoughts.
Keep a log of your observations. To be more inclusive and pluralistic, you could make a point of always thinking things through from there viewpoints before speaking or acting.
In particular, try seeing things through the eyes of people from very different backgrounds to your own. Individuals in the United States could work together to reduce prejudice and enjoy each others diversity by doing what is hardest first, and that is to change their line of thinking. When we refer to each other as individuals, and not as collective members of one group or another, if we each take responsibility to foster that believe perhaps it can become main stream.
