Responsibility of Preserving the Environment Essay Example
Responsibility for preserving the environment ultimately belongs to each individual person and not the government. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the opinion above. Support your point of view with reasons and/or examples from your own experiences, observations and readings.
Being a student of international affairs and a longtime member of WWF(world wildlife fund), it is and always has been obvious to me, that caring for the environment is more important than caring for the people who seek to live off of it and/or exploit it. The planet is currently undergoing a metamorphosis of exceptional potential and variance, but unlike what doomsayers claim, the planet will be fine, it’s the flora and fauna, that currently dominate it, that are actually in danger. Global warming, ecosystem pillaging, pollution, mutations, exotic diseases an
...d afflictions, ironically all seem to be interlinked and supporting of one another, in an effort to help reduce the footprint of the current flora and fauna on the planets resources. I say this, not being a herd-following, attention-seeking, earth-loving-hippy, but rather someone who has worked in and seen the above claims as part of daily life.
Individual action seems to be becoming quite potent when you understand the effect that globalized communication has had on the way the world works, but is repressed, as governments around the world vie for power in a new battle against activists. The environment is something that is most definitely the responsibility, of individuals and the government together, but it is the methods that are being used that end up causing a rift between even well-meaning entities.
For example, the industrializatio
that is spear-headed by governments world-wide, for ensuring their nations’ prosperity is in direct conflict with the goals of environmental protection mechanisms that have been hard-fought for. A personal experience can be had by any Pakistani who has taken a stroll in any city, the industrialized city has many avenues of pollution, yet little to none of environmental protection. While working in the capacity of a social volunteer in the slums of Islamabad and Lahore, I experienced the slums and their living conditions first hand, where the water pipes had been contaminated from burst sewage pipes, rendering the available fresh water supply unusable. The individuals were powerless, those who had the power did not know or care and the government thought it best to let it be, as it would be an effective and indirect solution to their problems of encroaching slums.
Grassroots level activism is best when given a supporting hand from the government, individuals acting on their own end up corroding the very state structure that allows them to act freely, while the government cannot act effectively without actual input from the people. The fight for environment is as much political as it is practical, it is seen as the new hot-topic for election contesters throughout the western world, while the resulting environmental policies mostly (if not all) fall short of the promised goals.
Though this does not mean that individual actors should think and act as if the environment and ecosystems they live in and use need not be taken care of. Individual responsibility is catching more attention and becoming more of a burden as the complexity of global communication
increases, thus issues such as environmental protectionism are coming more into focus, while also highlighting the effects of global environmental pollution and disasters.
The issue that effects every single one of the human species is something that warrants the attention of the human faculty in its entirety, by all its wondrous capabilities, not by conflict, but rather by cooperation and sacrifice.
