For this essay I have chosen my favorite coffee mug as my object to describe. It is round, with a slight taper at the bottom. It holds just under a full measured cup of liquid. I like the fact that it doesn’t hold a full cup since I like my coffee caffeinated, but too much caffeine gives me the jitters. The mug is made of stone and enameled in a base off-white color. The Stone composition ensures that it is dishwasher and microwave safe.
The diameter of the mug is approximately three inches, offering easy access to the liquid inside. A black band, less than a quarter of an inch think circles the outside lip of the mug. On the outside of the mug there is a floral design, with tiny p
...ixels or dots being visible to the naked eye suggesting that it was applied by a machine. The flowers are Orchids, three of them being a yellow to light cream color and the fourth being twice the size of the others is a light pink hue.
Some light green and light blue pedals and foliage are also visible around the flowers. Some of the flowers an foliage give the illusion of being cut off as they extend beyond the lip of the cup. A few patches of a black background can bee seen behind the flowers and leaves. The handle of the mug extends about two inches from the cup and is wide enough to accommodate two fingers making it easy to grasp and use. The handle itself is bout half an inch 2 thick and entirely baked in the
white enamel.
The pastel colors of the flowers compliment the white background well making it very pleasing to the eye without being overbearing or gaudy. Only a few tips of the leaves extend slightly past the half way mark of the outside of the mug. On an interesting not of personal character, there is a small dime sized chip in stone at the top of the lip just inside the mug on the far rim away from a right handed person. I feel this makes it personal to me since I am right handed and a left handed person would find the chip rather irritating ever time they went to take a sip.
The mug is light considering it is made of stone and it’s material lends no discernable taste to the coffee as can be the case with mugs made of other materials such as metal. The cup is usually quite cool to the touch when it doesn’t contain a hot liquid, in which case it is merely warm at best. The mug smells of vanilla when it is in use, deriving it’s fragrance from my favorite creamer, French Vanilla. In it’s pristine state it has the faint scent of lemons from the dishwashing detergent.
The only markings are on the bottom of the mug stating the maker (Vistromaster), safe applications (dishwasher and microwave safe) and that date and place of it’s manufacture (1990 in Indonesia). I find it rather peculiar that the date of manufacture is included, as this marking is usually only encountered on pieces of finer china, which my mug is clearly not. Overall, the appearance of the
mug compliments well the breakfast table center piece of fake flowers and is a joy to see through my sleepy eyes each morning as a brew a pot of magical Java to start my day in earnest.
