Germany has nine separate borders. They are Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. This would make it difficult to secure its borders.
Germany is unique in its borders because of the terrain and the Alps Mountain which is one of the world’s largest mountain range, long coastlines, and low-lying plains and forests (Reference, n.d.). The Chancellor of Germany has asked the EU to work together to secure the border by the exchange of data and creating a register of those individuals entering and exiting the country (Deutsche Welle (www.dw.com), 2017). Since Germany has had many terrorist attacks they had to strengthen their borders by looking for people with fake identifications, tougher residence laws, and surveillance (Deutsche Welle (www.dw.com), 2017). Russia has border patrol agents all over its borders to sec
...ure its borders. Some of these border patrol agents are military personnel (Quora, n.d.).
According to Stimson (2007), since Russia’s border is very lengthy, it is very hard to secure them. Further, since the breakup from the Soviet Union, they do not have the manpower or technology to adequately secure their borders (Stimson, 2007). Israel secures its border by a very high fence. This fence also goes far underground.
It has sensors and high-tech bristles. This is intended to stop all individuals who are not entering legally (Financial Times, 2016). Financial Times (2016), further suggest that the fences are not only built to keep out terrorists, but also illegal immigrants from other countries. These high-tech fences give an alarm if someone would try to breach its security. Then there are border guards to help with this method (Financial Times, 2016).
In comparison an
contrast, the United States have border patrol agents who help to secure the borders of this country. The United States also have drones, helicopters, and is proposing a border wall between Mexico and the United States. The terrain of Germany helps to keep secure its border as the terrain of Canada/United States. Israel mostly is now depending upon its high-tech fences with sensors and some border patrol agents. Some lessons that the United States can learn from these other nations are that even though these high-tech fences have their advantages, there are some disadvantages.
If an individual is determined to cross fences, they will find a way to do it, especially if they are trying to make a living for themselves and their families. Another lesson that the United States could learn from is that it must have a good relationship with the countries to help to put into place policies and laws that they can work together to deter illegal immigration and help to make it more difficult for terrorists to come through their country to get into another country. Some of the public safety issues are terrorists trying to destroy the country’s infrastructure and to create economic havoc for the citizens. The countries must be concerned with such as terrorists sneaking explosives into the country because some explosive such as plutonium can cause a mass destruction with a small amount.
There are other explosive devices that must be considered, even as in the case of the United States on September 11, the jet fuel was a byproduct of the death of many during the terrorist attack because of its volatility.
