Facts about Main Building (12) Discuss while in the Great Court

●Oldest building on campus, which houses the president's office, the provost's office, and many administrative units including admissions and Drexel Central ●Used by students for classroom spaces, performance spaces, and special events ●Built in 1891, originally housed all functions of the university such as classrooms, dormitories, and offices ●President Fry regularly hosts office hours to hear from current students. ●Ryder Clock (located in Great Court): The first dean of men, J. Peterson Ryder, had a penchant for punctuality, standing in the court, pocket-watch in hand, spurring on students late to class. He provided funds for the clock in the Great Court, inscribed, "Be on Time." ●Recognize "Autism Awareness Month" by putting blue lights in all of the arches, especially relevant given our School of Public Health's Autism Institute - only in the month of April. ●Water Boy Statue (located in Great Court): by the French sculptor (Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi) of the Statue of Liberty. Drexel tradition: students passing through the Main Building's Great Court have rubbed the toe for good luck in exams. ●Faculty-directed Chamber Singers host an annual "Madrigal Dinner" in February featuring student performers in Renaissance attire portraying singers, storytellers and jesters fit for a royal court. The Chamber Singers is a select group of 18 singers, chosen by audition from the University Chorus. This year the singers include students majoring in Culinary Arts, Music Industry, Electrical Engineering, and Nursing. ●During homecoming, one of the festivities is a rally/party in Great Court (with good food, of course) where the Homecoming Court is officially introduced. They each give a brief speech about their Drexel experiences, and then the entire study body has the chance to vote online for homecoming king and queen. Homecoming here is for basketball team in January! ●During Engineering Week, an egg drop happens- engineering students build a vehicle to best protect their egg. ●CAB (Campus Activities Board) organizes Drexel's annual Comedy Show held in Main Auditorium each year. The likes of Dane Cook and many Last Comic Standing contestants, Keenan Thompson and most recently Wyatt Cenac of The Daily Show have graced the stage. ●Annually, one of the sororities on campus, Delta Phi Epilson, hosted "Deepher Dude" which was a male pageant to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis in Main Auditorium. The sorority raised about $45,000, which was one of the largest amounts for all the chapters in the nation.

32nd St Park/Courtyard ●32nd St. Courtyard renovated and rededicated in Fall 2014 ($5 million gift from Perelman). Perelman has pledged an additional $6 million for the construction of a Center for Jewish Life at Drexel. The new facility, expected to open in the Fall of 2016, will be named Raymond G. Perelman Center for Jewish Life and will be located on N. 34th Street. It will be the first facility at Drexel dedicated to Jewish student life. ●CAB organizes pumpkin carving for Halloween and tie-dying t-shirts during Spring Jam in the Quad. Bossone Center ●Home to the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems ●Prepares students to conceive, design and develop devices and systems that improve human health and quality of life ●Many students in this major take advantage of the BS/MS accelerated degree ●The Bossone Center is one building in a complex of interconnected buildings where the College of Engineering is housed. Engineering facilities located within this area include department offices, laboratories and classrooms. College of Engineering Facts ●The College of Engineering has around 3,000 full-time undergraduate students across 9 majors: Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, Bachelor of Science in Engineering ●Over 85 labs and 100,000 square feet of research space ●It was designed by the same architects that did the pyramids outside the Louvre, I.M. They also have school supplies, Drexel logo items, and items to furnish your residence hall rooms. ● Present your visit agenda at the Bookstore to receive 25% of one Drexel logo apparel item Pennoni Honors College Facts ● The Hub on the 5th floor of MacAlister which includes the Honors College Dean's Suite, the Honors Seminar Room, where most Honors classes are held, and the Honors Lounge, where Honors Students enjoy private study space, computer bank and free printing. o Honors students have additional advisors in the Honors Program (we don't take the place of major advisors) o Honors students have a minimum cumulative GPA requirement of 3.2 o First, Honors students must earn 16 honors credits to complete program requirements o To graduate with distinction, Honors students must earn 32 honors credits o The Honors Program hosts a separate graduation ceremony where honors students are recognized and rewarded for their achievements o Honors students get priority registration Additional MacAlister-based Facts ● Students in Drexel's music industry program work with the MAD Dragon Record Label, DraKo Booking Agency, MADKo Concert Promotions, etc. recording and promoting professional acts: o MAD Dragon Record Label is under Music Industry Entities o Located in the lower level of MacAlister Hall o It has released and marketed over 10 albums since 2003 ● CAB hosts 3 major events each year: Fall Comedy Show, Spring Jam, and Crystal Ball o Discuss CAB and other student-run events throughout tour. For example, at the Armory it's good to note Drexel Traditions group hosts Homecoming concert there every year (see Armory section). ● Bookstore: o You can order books for class online, to be picked up at the store without standing in line or have them delivered straight to your house. o They buy back books at the end of the term and pay up to 50% of the "New" book price if the book is being used again next term. o Sell all Drexel merchandise, school supplies, bedroom materials, and snack food ● CHOICE Center- To support Drexel students in making good choices the C.H.O.I.C.E.S. (Choosing Healthy Options in Challenging Everyday Situations) Center for Alcohol, Other Drug, and Health Education offers a set of comprehensive and complementary initiatives designed to reduce high risk behaviors and related consequences and promote healthy and responsible behaviors. ● Outside the bookstore, Drexel's Alternative Spring Break program promotes their community service trips to international destinations such as Costa Rica and Honduras as well as domestic locales such as Appalachia-Kentucky and the New Jersey coast for continued Sandy Relief efforts. ● CAB organizes professional masseuses to provide free massages to students during finals week on both the University City and Center City campuses. ● Other events CAB hosts include trips to Broadway shows, Six Flags Fright Fest, Student Comedian Competition, free movie screenings, and puppies room (stress reliever) ● Honors College benefits ● Own CAB experiences (although this can be done around campus as well)

● University City is our neighborhood in West Philadelphia - shared with University of Pennsylvania and University of the Sciences ● Intersection is the boundary between Drexel and Penn ● 40,000 college students live in this neighborhood alone- creates a cool "college town" vibe, but still with all the benefits of a major city ● A valid student ID from any of the 3 universities provides students with access to the free shuttle services and libraries at any of the 3 ● Battle of 33rd Street- Drexel's basketball teams face Penn's almost every year and the game is traditionally known as to who will take ownership of the intersection where the campus' corners meet ● Favorite restaurants, music venues, etc. in University City ● If living off-campus & in University City, why you like it Discuss on corner of 33rd and Chestnut, outside PISB ● Ranked 4th in the nation for safety on a college campus for 2015 ● University's goal is to teach students to safely live in and be a part of their surrounding community, not keep them cooped up on campus ● The Department of Public Safety is a comprehensive program that includes: o Drexel University Police Department- Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. All officers are armed, with the power to make arrests and receive the same State Certification of any other municipal police officer in Pennsylvania. o AlliedBarton Security Officers who work in hand with Drexel Police. o Drexel University Public Safety Communications Center. This new state of the art communication center is the only stand-alone University Communications Center in the world accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. Personnel monitor over 115 emergency blue light phones, 500 cameras and 700 access control points. ● Police and Security Officers patrol in vehicles, on bikes and on foot. ● Patrol boundaries are from 30th Street to 36th Street, Chestnut Street to Spring Garden Street. ● Drexel's Police Department (DUPD) is open 24-7 and collaborates closely with the police forces of Philadelphia, Univ of Penn, SEPTA, and Amtrak to patrol University City ● Walking escorts are available to all students, faculty, and staff 24/7. Walking escorts are provided anywhere on campus. In addition, The University City District provides walking escorts for areas outside of our patrol boundaries within the University City area. Contact Public Safety at 215-895-2822 for a walking escort ● Public Safety has initiated a new Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) which consists of student EMT's who patrol campus and provide first responder medical care until Philadelphia EMT's can respond o Medical escorts are available to approved hospitals, emergency rooms, and healthcare centers under specific conditions. ● DPS also hosts seminars and programs to help students stay safe. ● DrexelAlert: a text message alert system for emergency situations ● Drexel Guardian: Turn your cell phone into a personalized safety device by downloading the FREE Drexel Guardian application, available for Android and Apple devices. In the event of an emergency, Drexel Guardian allows the Drexel Public Safety Communications Center to immediately access important information about you, such as your name, photograph, important medical information, and location when you initiate contact through the app — dramatically increasing the odds that they can find you and help you during an emergency. The service is free and voluntary, and the information you provide is kept completely confidential. o In order to use the new Drexel Guardian service, you must first download the Drexel Guardian application. Search "Rave Guardian" in the Apple App Store for iPhones or Google Play Store for Android phones and register using your Drexel email address. ● Reference earlier information / stories to highlight how security played into you feeling safe and comfortable (i.e. if talked about having dinners in Handschumacher, how safe did you feel walking back to residence halls at night?) ● Drexel identified as one of seven universities to participate in Department of Homeland Security's 'Campus Resilience Pilot Program'. Introduction ● Home to the Biology & BEES (Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science) department ● Drexel's first LEED certified building, opened in Fall 2011 Note, it's important to move closer to the outer classrooms when discussing the classroom experience Fast Facts ● New undergraduate major in Geoscience within BEES department ● DNA shaped staircase ● Features a 5-story Biowall, 80 feet tall (first at a US university) o Removes CO2 and harmful chemicals in the air naturally. o Sends clean air back into classrooms and offices. o Environmental Science classes monitor the entire system to determine if there are enough plants and if the air filtration system is efficient. o Largest Biowall in US; Canada has the largest, the same designer for both. o Biowall is hydroponic- growing plants in water with nutrient solutions, but not soil. ● All classrooms in PISB are smart classrooms (classrooms have SmartBoard technology, LCD projector, ability to plug in laptop at seat, DVD and VCR in room, and ability to tape presentation to post on Blackboard site late) ● Classroom experience (if PISB is first academic building where a classroom is seen while on tour, otherwise move this info to first building seen by group) o Student/faculty ratio is 10:1, and average class size is 18 o Allows students to get to know their faculty member & other students o Attendance/participation are part of the final grade in most classes o 80% of classes have fewer than 30 students, only 3% have more than 100 students o These larger classes are generally the lecture, and then smaller recitations/breakouts are required ● Drexel Faculty o 95% have highest degree in their field o Required to be professionally active in their field o Required to hold office hours each week for students to come by, ask questions, discuss projects, etc. Sample Stories ● Ask families to take a deep breath; it's the freshest air in Philadelphia!
