During the colonial era, America was under British rule and saw a substantial influx of European immigrants. The initial establishment of British settlers in Jamestown had a significant impact on attracting more immigrants. This successful settlement was fueled by the discovery of new lands that provided abundant opportunities, such as fertile land suitable for cultivating crops like tobacco. Consequently, it sparked the first wave of immigration primarily from Europe. This trend persisted until the American revolution in 1775 (Muhs et al 170).

During the immigration era, a diverse range of European individuals, including Germans, Dutch people, and other British-origin immigrants, arrived in the United States. Many of these European immigrants eventually became farmers as their main source of income. Another group known as indentured servants had a different experience upon arriving in the US. Their journey was funded by their colonial employers, but instead of receiving monetary compensation, they worked in exchange for necessities like food, shelter, and clothing. Muhs et al (170) also mention another group of immigrants who came to seek religious freedom due to religious constraints in their home countries - including pilgrims. These settlers settled in Massachusetts and established a new religious territory.

Irish Catholics made up the majority of Irish male immigrants to the U.S., representing at least 75% of the total number. Although not all individuals in this group, many were indentured servants who joined more than half of the impoverished European immigrants from the south in their migration to America. The decision to immigrate was influenced by high

unemployment rates in Europe. In the second part of this paper, I will examine the various effects that immigration has had on American land. While welcoming immigrants is an act of compassion, their continuous influx and settlement have resulted in both positive and negative outcomes, often with the negatives outweighing the positives.

Immigration greatly affects the job market, especially economically. Despite the robust American economy, immigrants present a significant challenge. They often possess unique skills and add to the number of professionals in their respective industries. However, this influx of workers ultimately leads to lower wages as employers adjust to meet the demands of a larger workforce.

Immigrants have an impact on the economy of legitimate citizens by generating a greater demand for goods, which in turn leads to a scarcity of products and subsequently higher prices. Consequently, this increase in prices compels legitimate citizens to allocate more funds towards purchasing consumer goods rather than investing. Furthermore, immigrants contribute to elevated levels of unemployment among legitimate citizens since they are frequently willing to accept lower wages. By taking advantage of numerous job opportunities that are accessible to them, immigrants secure employment positions at reduced pay rates. This inclination to embrace minimal compensation in fields that necessitate limited skills prompts employers to choose them over other candidates with the goal of maximizing their profits.

The competition for employment opportunities in the job market is also increased by immigrants. Due to possessing advanced qualifications compared to native individuals, some immigrants may secure available job vacancies, leaving legitimate citizens struggling in poverty (DeSipio et al 34). Therefore, the global issue of unemployment is emphasized by the aforementioned essay, as no country

has yet discovered a lasting solution to this problem. It implies that measures should be implemented to address the influx of immigrants into the U.S., thus aiding normal citizens in obtaining good employment opportunities.
