Measuring Mass Directly
Used to find the mass of an object.

Step 1 – Place the object on the pan.
Step 2 – Zero out the TBB.
Step3 – The mass is determined by the positions of the riders. Record the mass.

Finding Mass by Difference
Used to find the mass of a liquid in a container.

Step 1 – Measure the mass of the beaker(a).
Step 2 – Pour in your liquid.
Step 3 – Measure the combined mass(b) of the beaker and the liquid.
Step 4 – Subtract the mass of the beaker(a) from the combined mass(b).
Therefore, b – a = Mass of Liquid

Measuring Out a Substance
Used to obtain a specific amount of a substance.

Step 1 – Find the mass of a paper plate. Record mass.
Step 2 – Add the mass of the paper plate to the desired mass of the substance.
Step 3 – Preset the riders to the amount (the sum) in Step 2.
Step 4 – The substance is then placed on the paper plate a little at a time until the zero pointer is balanced with the zero point.
