Europeans wanted more influence over economic, political, and social lives of the people they conquered.

Colony- a country or a territory governed internally by a foreign power Protectorate- a country/territory with its own internal gov. BUT under control of an outside power Sphere of Influence- an area in which an outside power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges Economic Imperialism- an independent but less developed country controlled by private business rather then other gov.

a country would use a local political ruler to accept their authority to rule. These local officials handled daily management of the colony

where a country would want to have full power in running the colony b/c they see the foreign people as unfit to adapt to their complex gov. Europeans would bring in own rulers and DID NOT train local people European governing

the Royal Niger Company gained control of the palm oil trade along the Niger River and gave Britain a protectorate over the Niger river delta Eventually Britain got all of Nigeria

Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo

indirect rule

Algeria resisted French rule for 50 years Africans in German East Africa resisted the German's insistence that they plant cash crops instead of actual food--> uprising known as Maji maji rebellion

the emperor Menelik II played Italians, French, British against each other (all wanted Ethiopia) Also built up huge arsenal of modern weapons Then miscommunication in Italian treaty caused war

Ethiopian forces defeated Italians and kept their nation independent

Africans lost control of land/independence Lots of deaths due to war/resistances/famines Breakdown on traditional cultures--> unstable societies and identity problems for Africans Most harmful: division of the country

Reduced local warfare humanitarians improved sanitation, gave hospitals/schools --> life expectancy/ literacy rates increased economic expansion- African products became valued on international market
