Yale was founded as the Collegiate School in Killingworth, CT in 1701. after the death of Abraham Pierson, the college's first rector, the school was moved to Saybrook. in 1712, Jeremiah Dummer, a New Haven merchant, gave gifts of books to the college. the collegiate school moved to new haven in 1716 because of new haven's dedication of land to the school and some tax exemptions.2 years later, Elihu Yale, an officer in the British East India Company, gave 562 pounds, 417 books, and a portrait of King George I to the school. the school was renamed Yale college in his honor.

CIA, Nathan Hale story

When the CIA headquarters was constructed in Langley, VA the CIA wanted to purchase this statue from Yale, but of course Yale said no-even after repeated, generous offers. One night, the CIA snuck into Old Campus and created a cast of the statue and had it remade-if you ever venture to the CIA headquarters you will see an exact replica of this statue!

But what the CIA doesn't know: this isn't a statue of Nathan Hale. when Yale decided to create this stature to honor Hale in 1914, no record of Hale's appearance existed. so, to solve this problem, the administration called out onto Old Campus every member of the Class of 1914 and selected the \"most patriotic\" student model for the statue!

Vanderbilt Hall (1894)

1894. largest building on Old Campus, financed by Cornelius Vanderbilt of railroad fame in honor of his son William who died as a junior at Yale of typhoid fever. He made the stipulation that the suite located on the second floor would be reserved for an Vanderbilt who would ever come to Yale.

Theodore Dwight Woolsey (1801-1889)

Yale president from 1846-1889. He enclosed Old Campus. Only president of a northern university not to send southern students home during the Civil War. students rub his foot for good luck, as evidenced by his worn out shoe. this is because Woolsey was a big fan of Yale crew and when he came to the races, he team won; when he didn't come, they always lost. this continued for years until he passed away! he's a lucky guy!
