Chapter 1

During this chapter, they were describing how Samuel has a love for the forest. It describes how he lives the woods life while others in the East are more civilized. Samuel's mother isn't so fine with the idea of living in the woods because there aren't many people around.

Native American are dancing in celebration shooting muskets into the air with the British. Samuel here's a different sound of rifles firing and some soldiers fell to the ground. During the fight Samuel shoots one Indian and gets hit in the head from a tomahawk.

Samuel is having hallucinations about his mother "short, skinny, fragile, and brown haired." He finally woke up to a man over him chewing tobacco to help the wound. The man explained what has happened, what they have been doing to help him, and willing to continue the help.

Samuel completely wakes up and eats with the men that saved him. The men loaded all their supplies on an Ox and since Samuel was very weak he stayed in the back with that Ox.

Samuel leaves the men who saves him to go find his mother and father. He runs out of food, and finds a farm with livestock. He runs to fetch one of the chickens and gets stopped by a little girl named Annie. He had a meal with Annie's family, then as he was leaving the farm, it was burned down by soldiers that didn't seem to be the British.

Samuel finds Annie crying in the woods. She continued crying for 3 days as well as refusing to eat. Samuel is being as sneaky as possible to be undetected since there is no one that are trustworthy.

Samuel and Annie are looking at 2 sign showing they are between Philadelphia and New York City. They hide back into the woods to discuss Samuel's plan, but Annie wants stay with him. Samuel doesn't fight with Annie because she had just suffered a terrible lost of her own.

Samuel and Annie were caught sneaking through the woods by a merchant named Abner. Abner is willing to help Samuel get his parents back because he doesn't like the British himself. They had a long conversation about how the British overpower the Continental in numbers and practice.

The three are Approaching New York and they see American refugees on there way. Once all the Soldiers disappear into the woods, Abner sensed British soldiers coming soon. He guessed right but they just walked pass the trolley like it wasn't even there.

They reach the Shore of the Hudson River in New Jersey, across New York City. The river bank was filled with boats that were filled with prisoners in them. Abner finds his friend Matthew that will help them across the river bank.

Abner and Samuel scouts out the area where his mother and father were. His mother was working and his father was in prison. They secretly sneaked to where his father was imprison, by taking out one of the guards.

Abner brings the family back to the wagon and starts their journey through the night. He tells Samuel that they have to split up since he can no longer use the family card. Abner tells Samuel about Philadelphia and how he can safely get there.

Samuel's family were on the road heading towards Philadelphia. They get caught by some British Soldiers and Samuel almost get killed, but the people who helped Samuel early on came and saved the boy and his family. They made it to Philadelphia and stayed there till the war was over.
