1) Children with communication disorders frequently do not perform at grade level. They struggle with reading, have difficulty understanding and expressing language, misunderstand social cues, avoid attending school, show poor judgment, and have difficulty with tests. 2) Many articulation errors can indicate a phonological disorder which can affect spelling and reading. 3) Voice or pitch quality and volume can affect a child's self-esteem and social relationships. 4) Stuttering can prohibit the child from participating in class and/or extracurricular activities. 5) Deficits in auditory processing or attention and memory can affect performance in all academic areas that involve processing material and following oral directions.
