1) ASHA's Principle of Ethics I, "Individuals shall honor their responsibility to hold paramount the welfare of persons they serve," which includes the children who are in need of our advocacy to honor their needs above their parents' wishes. 2) ASHA's Principle of Ethics III also states that it is our responsibility to inform the public of the knowledge accumulated in our field, including the repercussions of failing to receive treatment.

1) Children with communication disorders frequently do not perform at grade level. They struggle with reading, have difficulty understanding and expressing language, misunderstand social cues, avoid attending school, show poor judgment, and have difficulty with tests. 2) Many articulation errors can indicate a phonological disorder which can affect spelling and reading. 3) Voice or pitch quality and volume can affect a child's self-esteem and social relationships. 4) Stuttering can prohibit the child from participating in class and/or extracurricular activities. 5) Deficits in auditory processing or attention and memory can affect performance in all academic areas that involve processing material and following oral directions.

An individual with pragmatic problems may: ● say inappropriate or unrelated things during conversations ● tell stories in a disorganized way ● have little variety in language use ● not know how close to stand to someone when speaking ● not know how to use proper eye contact or facial expressions Pragmatic problems can lower social acceptance. Peers may avoid having conversations with an individual with reduced social skills.

• More behaviors due to frustration of not being able to communicate. • Low self esteem in children. • Increased risk of psychiatric disorders.

• More likely to have jobs that are considered "unskilled and semiskilled." • Good communication skills, literacy, and strong interaction skills are very desired in the workplace, putting those with speech disorders at a disadvantage. • Those with persistent literacy skill problems earn nearly 11% less than their skilled colleagues. • Men with speech disorders are 8 times more likely to be unemployed. • "43% of people with SLCN [Speech, Language, and Communication Needs] were on low income - 1.5 times higher than the general population." • Interpersonal difficulties at work.

1) The first 5-7 years of life are the critical period of language development, the window when children learn languages quickly and with ease--changing speech errors becomes increasingly difficult after the critical period 2) Speech Therapy is fun! 3) With the 'wait and see' approach you risk the child reinforcing the errors he is making through continued use and, most likely, falling behind in his academics 4) When speech improves the child can be dismissed from Special Education services 5) Speech Therapy improves: ● Communication ● Social interactions ● Cognitive and educational development ● Emotional and behavioral development

● Difficulty organizing information for recall ○ Recalling information when reading ○ Basic math facts ○ Science information ● Slow responding ○ Difficulty completing work in school in a timely manner ○ May affect state mandated testing time limits beginning in grade 3 ● Inattentiveness ○ Difficulty focusing in class ○ Behavior problems

● Becoming frustrated when not being able to communicate ● Acting out (tantrums, kicking, screaming, crying) as a result of not being understood ● Abandoning any attempts to communicate needs with others ● Trouble forming relationships with others

§ Compared both tests with regular education and articulation disorders groups in 12 age categories (3.0-8.11). § Results showed LAT: o Has better predictive ability. o Has wider range of item difficulty. o Scores are more accurate. • LAT was found to better "detect differences in typical and atypical articulation development" • The LAT contains more current stimulus items than the GFTA-2 • The LAT is more affordable than the GFTA-2

LinguiSystems Articulation Test

1) Assessment of articulation disorder by testing all consonant sounds and blends at the word level 2) Screens for Childhood Apraxia of Speech 3) Can make appropriate recommendations for type and length of service 4) Can also be used to measure progress within therapy 5) The Speech Sound Error Analysis helps the examiner analyze the client's speech errors by word location, type, and stimulability

• Normed up to age 21 • Vocalic /r/ is tested in multiple contexts • Screens for Apraxia • Only takes 15-20 minutes • Every mispronounced sound is immediately tested for stimulability • Every consonant and blend is tested in every word position

● Since the LAT is relatively new, minimal information is available, including Evidence Based Data ● Does not take connected speech into account ● The stimulus items are appropriate for children, but this may be less true for adults
