Remember that the Roman Catholic Church took power in this point of time. The Medicci family was so rich (Said to be the richest family in Italy) they bought political positions. As we all know, power corrupts people. So, as result, having corrupt leaders in the Church led to a corrupt church.
*In addition, this led to the Reformation
*The corruption of the Church weakened itself, since people started to leave
The Renaissance (1350-1600)
-Spread of the Renaissance ideas increased with the invention of the printing press
-Ideas of the Renaissance:
-Increased Art and Learning
-Scholars wanted to explore new ideas and the physical world. Less focus on religion
-Science began to replace religion
-Printing press weakened Church
Effect of the Renaissance on the Church
Church loses A LOT of power in this period, estimated to be a 50% decrease

-England, France, Spain, and Portugal became dominant powers in Western Europe
-Strong rulers began to take over Feudal Lords
-Feudal Lords are part of the Feudal system
-Italy controlled the Mediterranean and trade with Asia
