Though the Virginia Company failed to find gold, they were able to cultivate tobacco. It became a major profitable cash crop in Virginia. It created social and economic divisions between landowners and those who did not own land. Because growing and harvesting tobacco was labor intensive, Virginia became highly dependent on slavery.
