Another important quality that Rat shows is smart. He demonstrates this quality in the scene where he make it look like he is meant to be there.

Raphael is friendly, kind/ caring and selfless. Gardo is empathy, clever and a leader. Rat is trusting, sneaky and thoughtful. At the conclusion of the novel, the three boys feel like they are able to achieve anything. They are free to fulfill their dreams of going fishing on a boat for ever. Despite many hardship, Raphael, Gardo and Rat grow as characters and friends. finally they arrive at a ‘beautiful‘ place where their lives can be lived more honestly: ‘We can tell you the truth, for the lying is finished‘ (pg. 202).
