question
What interests you about the CMTP
answer
I'm interested in the merchandising development program for several reasons. Besides the obvious of my love for fashion and following trends, this program in particular not only provides a challenge, but also allows me to be able to offer my creative input and make decisions while thriving in an ever-changing, fast paced environment. I liked that the program allows for on the job training as well as store and vendor visits. There is also unlimited growth in planning and buying with the opportunity to travel all over the world.
question
Name a time you had to use your analysis skills
answer
My senior year, I took a Psychology seminar class where I was given an assignment to report on the findings of cross-cultural differences among prosocial behavior, looking at the United States and non-western cultures in particular. Wondering whether Western or non-western cultures helped more? In doing this assignment, first I defined the question, made a hypothesis, and defined the variables. I gathered my information from psycinfo, which is a Psychology database, and I used different articles that varied in methodologies and motivational scales. I looked at individualism/collectivism. In-group/out-group, values. After collecting and organizing all of the data, I analyzed the trends and drew conclusions.
question
Where else are you interviewing?
answer
Your company is one of several potential opportunities I am exploring. I'm still pretty early in my job search but I've applied to a number of opportunities that will allow me to use my decision making skills and my interpersonal skills, however this position is the most exciting to me. In fact, I think this position is a particularly good fit for my skill set because I can leverage my significant experience in retail.
question
Explain a time where you had to use negotiating skills to solve a problem.
answer
Pleasing an irate customer who wanted to return something. Her item was used and we don't return used merchandise. Told her this. Eventually I took it back and put it on a store merchandise card.
question
Where do you see yourself in 10 years/career goals?
answer
I'm not sure anyone really knows where they will be in 10 years, but every year I would like to see myself growing from the previous position. I want to acquire new skills, new knowledge, and new insights into the industry. After this program I want to progress to an allocation analyst, senior allocation analyst, and then a planner or a buyer, perhaps even work internationally. In order to accomplish these goals, I will start by making a clear, defined list of my goals and by each goal I will set a specific date of when I hope to accomplish that goal. I will hang these goals where I can see them so I will stay motivated. In the meantime I will acquire new skills to help me reach these goals and continue to develop more business relationships. For example, I will learn a new language so I can eventually work internationally as a buyer.

question
Tell me about a time when you failed.
answer
I view most things as an opportunity to learn. If you learn something from an experience, it can never be a failure. I try to learn from everything I do. I failed to complete an assignment on time. It was my final semester in college and I was working a lot and had 18 credit hours. I asked for an extension. Next time I would have requested more time off at work. I thought I was ahead of schedule. Now I always try to complete my work early. In the middle of the project I wanted to change a part of the assignment. I realized ahead of time that I wouldn't be able to finish on time. I worked hard. Finished it __ days late. I learned from it. I would use a spreadsheet and set priorities and deadlines. I did not meet the deadline because I underestimated the amount of time the assignment would take me to complete. I learned the importance of better estimating time. S-We didn't make our sales card goal. We have a rewards card goal that is set every day, weekly, and monthly. A-People would even ask out on the sales floor to help their team out instead of just leaving it to the frontlines. I checked everyone's progress as well and printed their sales analysis at the end of the shift so they would know how they were doing. We went over in huddles ways to overcome no's. R-The next week, we recovered and made our goal. That Saturday we even got 20 cards. Before, there was a lack of feedback, lack of motivation, and some newer associates didn't know how to ask for a rewards card. Now when people get cards we announce it over the headset and we celebrate their success. For the first year of college, I worked 20 hours a week with two jobs and two psychology labs. It was my first time balancing work and school at the same time, and it was a difficult adjustment at first. I learned a lot-about time management, about planning ahead, and about knowing my workload limits. Failed a test-which made me very upset. I arranged to meet with a tutor once a week. The tutor helped a lot. My grades soon improved.

Acted with the customer in mind. I could see my coworker was needing help. Customer accused me of me not giving them back the correct change. Didn't have time to count the drawer down as it was a busy Saturday. So I gave them back the change that they said I had not given them and I made a note and put it in the drawer for the cash office associate explaining why the register would be short and told my manager.
