Prior to the Black Death, Europe was progressing socially, economically, and technologically during the Middle Ages. Economically, the economy was doing well. Trading and exploration of the new world were helping many European countries. The weather was good so farming was doing great. New farming technology such as plows and windmills were created and used. Textiles became popular. Iron and steel became popular and everything was booming. Socially, in the 75 million in the 1700s. Jobs were available and technology made work more efficient. Society was vulnerable because in 1310 the ice age happened.

Architecturally in the Middle Ages, cities were not made right. The center of cities was a fort, then houses, then walls. There were no rules or regulations for trash or waste. Unlike other cities, there were no sewers

or trash disposal areas. People threw their waste onto the sidewalk. All of this made public health and hygiene decline. However, it became an issue and some resolves are made such as paved roads and sewers.

The Black Plague appeared in Central Asia 21,000 years ago. It was spread by rats. Black oats were the host, but fleas gave the disease to humans. The Black Plague’s impact was causing millions of deaths and the destruction of Europe. One third of Europe died and it destroyed entire cities. Jobs were left unfilled and people were struggling to survive.

Cats were not used to kill rats in Medieval Europe because they were thought to be satanic. The people did not mind the rats and did not know about bacteria and how it would spread.

They got on ships and sailed to other ports, not knowing they were infected. This spread the disease to other countries. They defended themselves by leaving the area and trying to get fresh air. The Mongols tried to seize a city by catapulting them infected bodies into the walls of the city. Everybody tries to run as far as possible, but they cannot escape it as the plague is everywhere. Priests and monks were hit so hard because they were the ones who tried to help the sick. They would be with the sick before they died and pray for them. This made them infected and them living together made it spread quicker.

The impact the Black Death had on Europe’s social life was total devastation. Everyone lost everything they had and everyone they knew. Entire generations and lines of families were killed off. Social status was not an issue because no one was invincible to the plague. The impact the Black Death had on Europe’s economy was is disorganized. Wages were high, but there were very few workers. Because of all of the deaths, buildings and projects slowed or stopped. The deaths led to jobs being empty and no one in control of specific things. There was so much to do with little people do them. The economy went downhill. The impact the Black Death had on Europe’s agricultural life was also negative. Many farmers and peasants were affected because of their tight living conditions. Agriculture requires lots of work and strong animals and people. This led to crops not being grown and led to a decline in trade or the burning of contaminated goods.

The

modern world can learn from this disastrous event. We can now study the cause and effect of the plague. With this knowledge, we can do our best to prevent it. Medical studies can be done to try to find a cure or prevention method. We have learned to be more hygienic and how the disease spreads. The government and the people can prepare for the future with a plan of protection. If there was a new outbreak, we need to be prepared and ready to do whatever we can.
