Summary of events

1. Aeneas begins telling story of Fall of Troy. 2. Explains how Trojans were tricked into taking the Wooden Horse into Troy, instead of listening to Laocoon, the priest of Neptune, who begs them to destroy it. 3. He relates the horrifying death of Laocoon. 4. Aeneas sees Hector, one of the king's sons killed earlier in the war, in a dream, who warns him to save himself, the Trojan people, and their gods. 5. Aeneas wakes up to find that the Greeks have broken into the city and plunges into the fighting. 6. He sees King Priam brutally slaughtered by Achilles' son Pyrrhus. 7. As he is about to kill Helen in revenge, Venus stos him: she reveals that nothing can now save Troy as the gods have joined in its destruction, and persuades him to escape. 8. His father Anchises at first refuses to leave his beloved home, but is finally persuaded, and Aeneas leads his family and some other followers out of the burning city. 9. But on the way his wife, Cruesa is lost and Aeneas dashes madly back into the confusion to find her. 10. His search is interrupted by her ghost, which tells him his destiny and persuades him to return to the rest of his family. 11. The refugees assemble on Mount Ida.
