What is Stop And Wait?
The Stop and Wait Protocol is an error control protocol used for data transmission in networks. It is a simple and reliable protocol that is used to guarantee the delivery of data packets between two computers on a network. The Stop and Wait Protocol works by having the sending computer sends a single data packet at a time, then stopping until the receiving computer acknowledges receipt of the packet. After acknowledgement, the sending station can send another data packet. This process repeats until all packets have been sent. This protocol helps to ensure reliable communication by using acknowledgements to detect errors in transmissions or lost packets. If a packet is lost or corrupted, it will be re-transmitted when requested by an acknowledgement message from the receiver. The Stop and Wait Protocol also helps reduce congestion on networks because it ensures that only one packet can be sent at any given time, preventing multiple packets from arriving simultaneously which can cause congestion problems. The main disadvantage of this protocol is its slow speed as compared to other protocols due to its use of acknowledgements for every packet which takes additional time for communication between nodes. Another disadvantage is that if one acknowledgments are not received correctly then all subsequent packets must wait until it is received again before continuing transmission which leads to further delays in communication time.
