What is Soft Tissue Sarcoma?

Soft Tissue Sarcoma is a rare form of cancer that affects the body’s soft tissue. It can develop in any part of the body, including the muscles, tendons, blood vessels, fat, fibrous tissues and connective tissues. Soft tissue sarcoma can also occur in other organs such as the heart or lungs. Soft tissue sarcomas are different from other cancers because they do not spread to other organs in the body. Instead, they grow locally and invade nearby tissues. The cause of soft tissue sarcoma is still unknown but it has been linked to certain environmental risk factors such as radiation exposure and use of certain industrial materials like herbicides and dioxins. There are over 70 different types of soft tissue sarcomas and they can have different presentations which makes them difficult to diagnose accurately. Treatment for soft-tissue sarcomas depends on a few factors such as its size, location, type and stage at diagnosis. Surgery is usually used to remove the tumor with an aim to get rid of all cancer cells while preserving normal functions if possible. Other treatments may include radiation therapy or chemotherapy depending on individual patient needs and characteristics of the tumor itself. Regular follow up visits with your doctor should be done after treatment is complete so any signs or symptoms associated with recurrence can be monitored closely. Early detection is key since most cases are curable when caught early enough before metastasis occurs which significantly reduces survival rates for this type of cancer among patients diagnosed at advanced stages.
