What is Shakespeare?
William Shakespeare is one of the most famous and influential playwrights in the history of English literature. His works have been translated into over 50 languages and performed around the world for centuries. Although his authorship has been questioned, there is no denying that he stands as a central figure in Western culture. Shakespeare’s career began in 1592 when he was just 28 years old. He wrote 37 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other shorter pieces over the course of his lifetime. Some of his best-known works include Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Tempest. These plays are known to be full of memorable characters such as Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet; Prince Hamlet; Lady Macbeth; Oberon, Titania and Puck from A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Prospero from The Tempest; And many more. All these characters come with complex emotions which make these stories highly entertaining to watch or read. Shakespeare’s writing style was also revolutionary at its time he introduced new words (over 1700.) to our language while using figurative language such as metaphor and simile to craft powerful images within his work that still hold true today. His use of soliloquy allows us insight into what each character is thinking about or feeling during any given moment which makes for very interesting dialogue between different parties whether it be lovers quarreling or families at odds with one another due to tragedy or miscommunication. It also helps bring humor into some scenes by having certain jokes only understood by those who know what is really going on beneath surface level conversations. The lasting impact that William Shakespeare has had on modern culture cannot be denied his influence can still be seen today through adaptations in film, TV series’s books etc., all paying homage to this great writer whose work continues to captivate audiences across cultures even centuries after its first creation.
