What is Following Too Closely?

Following too closely, also known as tailgating, is a dangerous driving behavior that puts both drivers and pedestrians at risk. Tailgating is when one driver follows another vehicle too closely, leaving little reaction time or space to stop if the lead driver brakes unexpectedly. This irresponsible driving habit is a major cause of rear-end collisions and can cause serious injuries to those involved in an accident.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends maintaining a three second distance between you and the car ahead of you while driving in ideal conditions. However, when driving on wet or icy roads, as well as highways with high speeds, it’s important to maintain an even greater distance between vehicles for safety reasons. In addition to causing accidents due to lack of reaction time and stopping power, following too closely can also be distracting for drivers since they are constantly focused on keeping their eyes on the car ahead instead of scanning the surrounding environment for potential hazards. Furthermore, tailgating creates road rage from other drivers who become irritated at the behavior and may take aggressive action against the tailgater in return. To prevent tailgating from occurring on our roads and highways it’s important that everyone adheres to safe following distances while operating their motor vehicles. Drivers must be aware of their surroundings at all times by making sure they have plenty of space between them and other cars around them at all times so they can react quickly in case anything unexpected occurs such as sudden braking or obstacles in their path. In addition to this practice being safer for every person involved on the roadways it also shows respect for other drivers by giving them enough space so they don’t feel pressured or rushed when traveling from one place to another. Finally, remember that no matter how rushed you might feel it is always better to err on the side caution when out on our nation’s highways and streets by avoiding following too closely whenever possible.
