“Should college befree?” debate has cut across every scholar, and law makers’ conversation table and the answer is beyond yes or no. The answer to this topic needs to be elaborated from both sides for right and an inclusive decision. College should be free for the future of any country depends on the state of its youth who are the leaders of tomorrow. Education is considered a path to brighter future. Many young people are unable to complete their education journey in the higher institution due to its high cost of tuition fee.
Those who can struggle and join college, are left with student loan debt and credit card debt making the whole journey expensive. As a result, this essay will explicitly elaborate the importance of allowing college education to be free due to its immense benefits both to the individual and the community a
...s a whole. Making college education free comes with its benefits both to the person and the states or community. It will offer a large opportunity for the young generation to acquire means of gaining knowledge and educative experience that will help them in their personal life. Making college education will assist one to develop a self-reliance nature and attitude. Education sharpens our individual skill enabling us to relate properly with those around us.
Therefore, by making college education free, more people will be self-reliance and accountable due to the education they have gained through college. According to Morrill Act of 1862 and grant colleges were created by federal governments to allow higher education to every student from all social classes. During this time students attended public colleges without paying any tuition fee
It is only fair to the current government to continue with what the founding fathers had begun since the government can pull resources together and pay for students’ tuition fee. Educating the whole nation is beneficial to the society as a whole.Jobs today are knowledge-based and require technical skills that can only be provided by education.
Educated youths will help fill the knowledge and skills gap in the country. When many are educated then many are employed which is not always the case (Thompson and Cumming, 2010). Employment increases the development of a country economy and living standards of an individual. Employment is also beneficial to the government since it will get tax revenues from those employed which can then be used o other departments such as health. Making college free will give students and graduates more freedom pursue their talents, explore new ideas and follow their dreams since they are off the burden of thinking about their student loan debt. Students especially struggling with their fee will be at peace and focus on their studies and graduate on time ready to get to venture into the job market.
Countries should strive and provide free college without giving excuses since it has been successful in other countries, particularly in Europe. As for 2013 to 2014, some of the countries that had free tuition in public universities for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses included; Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Turkey, Slovak Republic and German. It is always good to learn from other and emulate good is ideas, and this is one idea that shouldbe followed. Free college can work since is not a new concept that has never been practiced
in the recent years, federal states have established the Successful free community college in the United States. States like Minnesota and Oregon have a successful free community college with several other states proposing the idea to be implemented. The national government should learn and emulate these federal states to provide free college education.
Apart from states, some schools that start from kindergarten, high school, and college have proven that free college is possible through 100 percent scholarship given to their students. It does not make sense, which a government full of resources cannot manage, funds well and be able to pay students fee while a school can manage itself and provide such opportunity. An example of such school includes Kalamazoo in Michigan that gives 100 percent tuition fee for a student who has been in that institution from kindergarten to high school (Zgaga & Licht, 2005). Many critics on free college have argued that the government cannot afford free college due to the highturnout of students enrolling in colleges each year. However, the situation can be reversed and achieved in various ways; first, the government can partner with the private organization, Non-Profit Organization, and even churches, to help raise tuition fee for low-income students. Secondly, the government should allocate more funds towards education.
The money that government is spending on sectors such oil and gas and wall streets can also be allocated to the higher education system. If the government can cut unnecessary spending and divert it to education, and then funds will be available to make a dream come true. In conclusion, free college should be proposed for the sake all smart students who are unable
to attend college.Having free college requires a political will to enact it and community support. An educated nation makes the future look brighter, and a lot of lives may be changed when such opportunity knock their door. Higher education may also create a discipline group of youth that will see youth crime rate and drug abuse reduce.
