There are well-defined rules involved in the sport of ski jumping. According to the various rules and regulations that are in place for the sport, there is a penalty for those ski jumpers who are below the minimum required body mass index that is considered to be safe.
This penalty is passed on to these ski jumpers in the manner that they have to fulfill the maximum ski length that is much shorter. This leads to the reduction in the overall aerodynamic lift that they can possibly achieve. The rules have been set keeping in mind the lowest possible weight of the athletes or to be valid even in the scenario of the underweight athletes. In spite of well-defined rules being in place for the sport, some of the athletes still have this tendency of losing their weigh
...ty even further so as to ensure that they are capable of covering the maximum amount of distance. The scoring system of ski jumping is required in order to declare the final winner in the sport. There are several parameters that play an important role as far as the scoring system of ski jumping is concerned.
This system is based on the evaluation related to various specifications which are related to wind conditions, the distance covered by the ski jumper, the style used by the ski jumper, the in-run length, and others. There is a target defined for each and every hill. This target is generally given the name of the calculation point of the K point. This can be described as the par distance that a particular ski jumper must aim for.
It can also be describe
as that point where some of the ski jumpers land prior to their actual landing area. On the landing strip, this point is generally marked as the K line. The K line is 90 meters for a K-90 competition and it is 120 meters for a K-120 competition. If the skiers are able to land on the K line, then they will be able to score 60 points. However, if they missed this target, that is, if they are not able to land on the K line, then they will lose points for each and every 3 feet that are missed.
Depending upon whether the ski jumper falls short of the target or he actually surpasses the target, his points will be actually calculated. The size of the hill is actually important for determining the value of the meter. There is a tower that is located close to the expected landing point. There are five judges that are present in this tower.
These judges are responsible for evaluating the style of the skiers and they also have the authority of awarding up to 20 points for the same. The finer elements that are evaluated by these judges are the position of the skis maintained by the ski jumpers, balance of the participants, the body position and also their landing skills. A total of 120 points will be scored by that participant in the competition who is able to land on the K-Point and also who is able to score 20 points from at least 4 judges. In order to compensate with the weather conditions that could be variable in nature, there was an introduction of
a new scoring system in January, 2010.
