Matter
Composes any physical substance
Atom
The simplest or smallest unit of an element; atoms make up all matter
Molecule
A particle made of atoms joined together
Mass
A measure of the total amount of matter contained within an object
Weight
A measure of the amount of gravity acting on an object’s mass
Data
Facts or statistics gathered from experimentation
Quantitative
Data based on numerical findings
Qualitative
Data drawn from the five senses
Physical Property
A characteristic of a substance that can be observed (color, taste, texture, etc.)
Energy
The ability to do work, may exist as heat, solar energy or motion
Heat
Energy of moving particles (thermal energy)
State of Matter
A classification (grouping) of matter based on the interactions of its molecules
Solid
The most tightly packed state of matter; molecules may only vibrate against each other
Liquid
A state of matter in which molecules may move freely but cannot expand indefinitely
