The film starts out as Solomon Vandy and his son, Dia, were on their way home and notices that a group of rebel forces were bound for their town. Many people were killed, some who were lucky got out (including Solomon's family) while some unfortunate ones got captured and made to work in the mines like Solomon. They were made to mine for diamonds, blood diamonds. These gems are used to fund wars throughout the country.
While working in the mines, Solomon chanced upon a huge pink diamond. He was caught by the commander of the rebels while he was trying to hide the gem.The government forces then arrived, making the commander unable to do anything about the diamond. Solomon was able to bury it and then was put to jail with all the other miners. The
...commander announced the existence of the diamond in the jail which doesn't escape the attention of David Archer, a smuggler who works for Van de Kaap and was arrested when he was trying to smuggle diamonds into Liberia. He arranges for Solomons freedom and then tries to persuade him to tell him the location of the elusive diamond, which he needs to obtain so that he could get out of Africa for the time being.
David later on meets an American journalist by the name of Maddy Bowen. She is doing a story on the blood diamonds and insists on David's cooperation. He makes a deal with her to help him locate Solomon's family in exchange of information on the blood diamonds trade. Solomon later on discovers that his family is safe in a refugee camp but his so
was taken by the rebel forces.
They set off without Maddy Bowen, who was evacuated, to find Solomon's son and the pink diamond. Later on, they return to the mine where Solomon found the diamond. David reports the coordinates of the mine and sends in a chopper to wreck the place. They arrange to go in later when David finds that Solomon has already gone and found Dia. Dia doesn't acknowledge his father and the commander orders Solomon to find the diamond or he'd kill Dia.
The air raid comes just in time and in the commotion, Solomon kills the commander with a shovel. The government forces then instruct Solomon to procure the diamond. Eventually Solomon, Dia and David make it out from the group with the diamond in tow. David arranges for a plane to take them to Guinea but unfortunately, he acquired a deadly wound on his side and asks Solomon to take the diamond and take care of his family. He also calls Maddy to meet Solomon and assist him with the diamond.
He dies at the cliff with a mound of dirt in his hands. The story continues with Solomon selling his diamond to the Van de Kaap company with Maddy documenting everything. The film ends in a conference about the blood diamonds with Solomon Vandy as a speaker. Solomon Vandy represents the people.
The citizens who are exploited and are stuck in the middle of all the chaos produced by the government and the media. In the movie, he is exploited by the rebels as a helpless miner. He is later used by David Archer to find the pink diamond and by Maddy
Bowen so that she could write her story. Solomon chancing upon the precious pink diamond catapulted him into power.
With only him knowing the location of the stone, it gave him immunity and as David said, it could buy him safety and information. It could even help him find his family. He was hopeful that once his story was published by Maddy, help from other countries would come. Maddy Bowen characterizes the media. An all powerful medium that helps shape the people’s opinion, people like Solomon Vandy.
Maddy is an American journalist that wants to write a story about the blood diamonds. She tries to seduce David into telling her the information he knows about this illegal trade. This shows a dark side of media, that it uses dishonest means just to get some information. She later on redeemed herself as she stated in an argument with David that writing about the diamonds was all she could do, that she knows it might make some people cry but it’s not enough to stop the war. This tells the story of media people all over the world.
That no matter how much you broadcast and write about these stories, if no one takes the time to listen, it would all go to waste. David Archer illustrates the government in its greatest moments and downfalls. His experiences and sufferings corrupted him and turned him into a cynical self-important person he is at the start of the movie. In his journey to find the diamonds, he eventually redeems himself.
He views the cycle of the blood diamonds as a never-ending cycle fuelled by the shady characters behind the government, the
diamond business, and the very people who unknowingly purchase these diamonds.Much of what I discovered in watching this film has helped me see things in a different light. Not just diamonds but every other product imaginable could’ve commenced the same chaos the diamonds caused in Africa. This commotion may not only happen in Africa but also in any other country. Innocent people like Solomon, who just wanted to live their life in a quiet environment, are dragged into the turmoil constructed by the greedy individuals who only see money and power as the most important things in this world.
The fact that the rebels cut off the citizens’ arms so that they won’t be able to vote was very disturbing. They recognize the people’s power that’s why they had to prevent the citizens to vote, so that they could stay in power. The citizens have power, they just didn’t recognize it yet. It was just how Solomon was empowered by the diamond, the same effect would happen if the people recognize their innate power of choosing their own government and initiate change.
This movie could help change the way the world operates. Although like Maddy, even if the message is very vital, if no one would be there to listen and act upon it, nothing useful would come out of it.
