The abnormal psychology disorder I decided to research was depression. I was interested in learning more on this topic because I wanted to know how people act and feel. What kinds of feelings, emotions people feel, how people react to certain situations, and lifestyle choices people make. The first article will help me learn more about the relationship between quality of life and physical activity.

The second article I chose will show me approaches to helping an older adult with a certain learning disability and a cognitive impairment. The third article I chose to research was protective factors in adolescents and social support. These articles have helped me learn more about depression being a disorder that several people deal with in todays society.

Study I

Several positive effects have been shown with physical activity to improve quality of life. Positive emotional health leads to lower instances of depression. Patients with depressive disorder can also show negative effects with emotional distress and low social functioning in society. Making it hard for people going through depression to function in everyday life.

study, a condition that causes a person to have a difficult time in performing activities in important areas of life, where the challenges are a consequence of metal disorder and they must be able to complete a questionnaire with no signs of learning disability or dementia and cannot have a severe disability such as blindness or extreme weakness and be able to answer independently. This criterion had to be met in order to be a part of the study because it makes the results outcome more accurate. Data that was collected for quality of life by a short form health survey.

This survey has thirty-six multiple choice questions. These questions assess eight domains including physical functioning, role limitations, social functioning, mental health, energy, pain, and general health. Physical activity was assessed by a habitual physical activity questionnaire. This was a self-administered test that included topics of work activities, sports activity and leisure activities.

From this study the results showed that physical activity is high among the subjects that have depression. Daily physical activities results show that a larger amount of the subjects- 69.2%- climb stairs instead of taking a lift in order to exercise and 84.6% of subjects walk short distances instead of riding in a car or bus. Some of the biggest differences in males who have depression from males have different results in quality of life: emotional health, vitality, and physical activity.

Discussion

From everything I have researched and read over the topic of quality of life and physical activity of patients with depression disorder I have learned several different things. Ones quality of life can be a variety of different factors including education, occupation, financial situations,

healthy, and meeting individuals needs. Having depression disorder with quality of life depends on how bad the disease is and how much the person is truly affected. Results show that having a better emotional health and social functioning, the patients with mental disorders have an overall better health.

Study II

Study two I chose to research was over approaching and helping an older adult with a learning disability and cognitive impairment overcoming depression. This study shows that behavioral activity for depression is just as equally effective but does not have as complex of treatment then cognitive behavioral therapy.

Therefore, this may be better suited for older adults who are cognitively impaired or have a certain learning disability. In this article there is information on how people with learning disabilities can learn new behaviors which can make them feel better and think about things differently. There are several ways to help an older person with learning disabilities and memory problems to change how they behave and feel emotionally.

Method & Results

A different kind of method was used here in a case study. The case study indicated that the behavioral approach was used to determine the support of an older adult with a learning disability and mild cognitive impairment who were depressed. Establishing baselines for people with a learning disability is often difficult. “Ron scoured 23/40 on the Glasgow Depression Scale for people with a Learning Disability (GDS-LD; Cuthill et al., 2003), indicating moderate depression, and 19/54 on the Glasgow Anxiety Scale for people with an Intellectual Disability (GAS-ID; Mindham & Espie, 2003), indicating mild anxiety” (Green).

These results on the GDS-LD were reduced which shows that a clinically significant improvement in

the symptoms he is experiencing of depression and anxiety. An increased engagement in activities and seeing an improvement in his problem-solving abilities were clear. Therefore, this method shows that behavioral activation has a treatment for depression in an older adult with a learning disability and mild cognitive impairment.

Discussion

This study showed ways to be most effective in reducing depressive symptoms and signs in an older adult who has mild cognitive impairment and a learning disability. It also shows us that there are ways to improve the psychological well being in people with learning disabilities.

Study III

Protective factors for depressive symptoms in adolescents: Interpersonal relationships and perceived social support is the third study I was interested in researching more. This topic makes me wonder how people with depressive symptoms can make and keep relationships when having a variety of different emotions and feelings.

When they do make friendships how they get their friends to support them and the people around them to understand what is going on the ones head. From this study I found that there were three types of interpersonal relationships and depressive symptoms. The three relationships in school that were discussed where opposite- sex peer, same- sex peer, and teacher- student relationships. These were tested for further research.

Methods & Results

1,700 random participants in this study were given a survey from two suburban and two rural high schools in three cities. Measuring depressive symptoms is us with the CES-D-SF. This scale has three factors to be considered: depressive affects, positive effects, and somatic and rerated activity. This scale shows depressive symptoms and showed it has reliability.

A second measure is the perceived social support in schools. The Multidimensional

Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) is a twelve-question self-evaluation scale. This scale shows accuracy of social support. This scale has three considerations family, friends and significant others. Participants rate each statement to the most accurate number on the scale.

The third scale in this research study discussed interpersonal relationships in school. This scale watched quality of five dimensions. The five dimensions were opposite- sex peer, same- sex peer, parent- child, teacher- student and stranger relationships. Participants were asked to rate which statement was best suited for describing the quality of relationships. Results were widely spread out showing different methods all work to get the closely related results each time.

Discussion

Results of this study have a link between interpersonal relationships, social support, and the depressive symptoms. Differences were also showed on the variety of different interpersonal relationships. The effects of relationships in a school on the depressive symptoms can be determined and perceived by the amount of social support one person receives. All three types of interpersonal relationships and social support had certain direct effects on depressive symptoms. (Luo).
