My Desire to Jump From a Parachute in the Summer Holidays Essay Example
When you’re 13,000 feet in the air, it is one of the most blissful experiences you can feel. Yet, so many people will never come close to that feeling because of fear. In the midst of my summer vacation in Bermuda, I had the urge to go skydiving, solely out of curiosity.
As my parents signed the waiver form, a shot of adrenaline coursed through my veins. In that short period of time, I felt immortal, I had nothing to fear. Soon after, I began to process the outcomes of my decision. That night, I found myself laying down on my bed staring at the blank canvas that was my plastered ceiling. I was sweating profusely, sweat dripping down my sides as my emotions turned from excitement to reluctance.
Different scenarios kept popping in and out of my head. Soon enou
...gh, the sun beamed its undying light through my window and I knew I couldn’t withdraw from my previous decision. Around noon, I found myself in a worn down jeep heading towards an airstrip. The vehicle came to a sudden halt.
I stepped out, and the tall Bermuda grass grazed my calf as I slowly marched towards the airplane. A lanky dark man projected, “I’m your instructor, do as I say and I promise this will be over in a jiffy”. I stepped into a tiny aircraft, and instantly, the scent of cigarettes from the pilot filled the back cabin. The engine sputtered, the seats started to shake and the airplane was speeding towards the end of the runway.
“It’s time”, the instructor shouted as his words got lost in the blistering wind. As I prepared myself for th
jump, I could feel my heart pulsating like a beating drum. My toes were leaning out of the plane and I was staring down into fear itself. “1, 2, 3” and my instructor pushed me out of the plane. As my body left the aircraft, all my fear and anxiety disappeared.
I was flying, the cool wind blew in my hair. I looked up and saw an ocean of sky blue with clouds made of cotton. The sun beamed down at me, exposing the endless valley of green and brown. At that moment, the world never seemed so beautiful, as my body drifted freely in the open air. “3000 feet”, the instructor yelled as he pulled the cord.
I could feel a force pushing against my back. My surroundings were slowing down and the air became more tranquil. This feeling was different; it was a leisure ride compared to the freefall I was just in. The once miniscule buildings and prairie seemed to grow larger as I continued my journey downwards. The lesson I took from this event was why was I scared in my bed 13 hours prior before my jump, why was I scared in the car.
What did I need to fear for when I was nowhere near the airplane. Anything up to the point of stepping out there's actually no reason to be scared. The only thing fear did prior to the jump was making my day miserable. Fear should not be an obstacle for you to achieve a goal. If you let fear take control of your life, the opportunities you are given will become meaningless.
Success is the ultimate outcome of constant failure
and that proves true in my life as I overcame many hardships both academically and socially.
