During this time, both Michael and the Jackson 5 focused on their music careers and had a cartoon show named after them from 1971 to 1972. However, tension arose when Joseph Jackson wanted more control over his son's music content, causing conflicts with Berry Gordy. Consequently, Jermaine Jackson departed from the group to pursue a solo career at Motown. Meanwhile, the remaining members of the group signed a new contract with Epic Records and rebranded themselves as the Jacksons. They gained recognition for their songwriting abilities with the release of Destiny in 1978, which was their third album under Epic Records.

In 1979, Michael Jackson had a significant impact on the music industry with the release of his solo album, Off the Wall, which effectively blended funk and pop genres. This showcased his talent and led to further success. He went on to create many other popular songs such as "Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough," which won a Grammy Award, along with "She’s out of My Life" and "Rock With You."
