Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown, was impressed with their performances as opening acts, leading to their signing to the label in 1969. This opportunity also allowed them to be exposed to the Supremes. During this time, they released Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5, an album that gained popularity on the charts by the end of December. Additionally, several singles from the album, including The Love You Save and I’ll Be There, made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, with I Want You Back topping the list. These achievements built a strong reputation for the group and set the stage for their future endeavors. At just 13 years old, Michael Jackson embarked on his solo music career alongside his work with the Jackson 5, establishing his own unique image.
In 1971, Michael Jackson
and the Jackson 5 rose to fame with their hit Got To Be There. The next year, Michael achieved his first No.1 single, Ben. During this time, both Michael and the Jackson 5 focused on their music careers and had a cartoon show named after them from 1971 to 1972. However, tension arose when Joseph Jackson wanted more control over his son's music content, causing conflicts with Berry Gordy. Consequently, Jermaine Jackson departed from the group to pursue a solo career at Motown. Meanwhile, the remaining members of the group signed a new contract with Epic Records and rebranded themselves as the Jacksons. They gained recognition for their songwriting abilities with the release of Destiny in 1978, which was their third album under Epic Records.
In 1979, Michael Jackson had a significant impact on the music industry with the release of his solo album, Off the Wall, which effectively blended funk and pop genres. This showcased his talent and led to further success. He went on to create many other popular songs such as "Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough," which won a Grammy Award, along with "She’s out of My Life" and "Rock With You." In 1982, Michael decided to focus more on his individual career and collaborated with rock star Paul McCartney on their hit song called "The Girl is mine." Throughout this time period, he solidified his status as The King of Pop through numerous successful pop hits and albums.
One of his successful albums is Thriller, which was released in 1982. It became the best-selling album in history, with hits covering seven slots of the top 10 in the charts. Thriller also introduced
his famous Moonwalk dance style. The album held the number one position for approximately 38 weeks and remained on the charts for a total of 80 weeks. It received 12 Grammy Award nominations and secured 8 wins.
In 1987, he released another album called Bad. Although it reached the top of the charts, it did not achieve the same level of success as Thriller.
Michael Jackson's music career started to decline after releasing his album History in 1995. This decline was overshadowed by molestation allegations that ruined his reputation. Unfortunately, during his comeback tour in 2009, he encountered health issues and passed away.
