question
Welcome
answer
Hey everybody! My name is Sarah. I am a sophomore and Secondary Math Education major from Pittsburgh, Pa. I want to get a feel for who is all here so can all the prospective students go around and say their name, hometown, and prospective major. This will be an hour and a half long walking tour where we will cover a lot of buildings and information about Penn State. Sadly we will not be seeing Beaver Stadium, the Bryce Jordan Center, or the Pegula Ice Arena because these places are usually closed off to the public unless there events going on. If you have any questions at any point in time, feel free to interrupt me. This tour is for all of you, so I don't want you to walk away with anything unanswered. I will be walking backwards for the duration of this tour. I do this a lot so I know where I am going, but if any small animals or children run behind me, please let me know. Are there any alumni with us today? Awesome! Now here at Penn State we have a special chant called the 'We Are' chant and it goes like this. When I say 'We Are' you yell back 'Penn State!' You ready? "WE ARE" .... "PENN STATE!" That was awesome guys!
question
Academics
answer
The average class size is about 25-35 students with 42% of classes fewer than 20 students. There is 17-1 student to faculty ratio. Class sizes are setup as a pyramid with bigger classes early on and smaller classes as you get more and more specified in your major. The largest classroom has 725 seats and is located in 100 Thomas. There are ways to make a class feel smaller. Sit in the front of the class. Go to office hours. It is mandatory for each professor to have an hour of office hours each week so they basically just sit there and wait for you to come and ask questions. The larger lecture classes usually have recitations led by Teaching Assistants (TA's) where they cannot teach new material, but instead review it with you and help answer any questions you may have. As a first year student you are guaranteed to have at least two classes under 30 students: your first year seminar and English 15. The seminar can be on any topic in or out of your major. Incoming freshman schedule their classes at New Student Orientation (NSO). After you accept your offer of admissions you will be emailed about taking the Aleks Math Assessment and Education planning survey. About a week after completing those two things you will be able to schedule an NSO date. You attend NSO over the summer. It is a two day event and on the second day you will meet with advisors from your college and they will help you to schedule the classes you need. We schedule through a new program called LionPath. All you have to do is find the class you want, add it to your planner, and when it comes time for you to enroll you just press the enroll button and you are done. Also in the summer is a program called Learning Edge Academic Program (LEAP). LEAP is a 6 week summer transition program. Students take 6 credits with a 'pride' with a combination of your first year seminar and an English course. I participated in the LEAP program and it was probably one of the best decisions of my life.

answer
The Rodney A. Erickson Food Science Building was built in the summer of 2006. On the first floor of the Food Science Building is the Berkey Creamery and home to the nation's first collegiate course in ice cream manufacturing taken by none other than Ben and Jerry. The Creamery ice cream is so fresh that it takes only four days to transfer from the cow to your cone, or in other words from moo to you. Not only can you enjoy the ice cream here, you can also enjoy in all dining commons around campus. There are two important rules at the Berkey Creamery; First, you can have any color of sprinkles you want as long as they're blue or white. Second you cannot mix ice cream flavors. Does anyone know the only person to mix flavors at the Creamery? President Bill Clinton. It was the girl's first day at work and when the president comes up and asks for Peachy Paterno and Cherry Quist how could you say no? Another president who has enjoyed Creamery Ice cream is Barack Obama. For his inaugural ball, states were asked to send special food and Pennsylvania sent three Creamery flavors: BaRocky Road, Biden Berry, and Obama White House. If you are worried that you will not have time to get creamery ice cream no worries because you can take home the ice cream. You let the counter know how much ice cream you want and they will get you an appropriate size bag with dry ice.

There is an involvement fair twice a year on the HUB lawn. Hundreds of orgs come out to recruit new members. I would recommend checking it out no matter what year you are in. There are over 1000 clubs here at Penn State with any interests you may have. When I went my freshman year I signed up for all kinds of different clubs, so many that I could not possibly participate in all of them so here is what I recommend. I recommended joining three different types of clubs: a social organization, a organization for your major, and a philanthropic organization. Joining clubs is a great way to get to know all kinds of people at Penn State.

Originally it was the entire campus, where students and faculty lived, worked, and attended classes. The original structure was begun on this site in 1856 and completed in 1863. Rebuilt in 1929-1930 using many of the stones which had been quarried from the University Gates near the Corner Room restaurant. When building Old Main, workers used mules to carry stones from the quarry downtown. Well one mule outshone the rest and his name was Old Coaly. Old Coaly was so good that they decided to make him Penn State's first mascot. After Coaly died, Penn State decided to preserve his bones and they are now stored in the hub. Students often liked to pull pranks at the Bell Tower. In 1870's the bell tower signaled time to wake up, go to classes, and work. Students would turn the bell upside down and fill the bell with water in the winter to cancel classes. In addition students and even teachers would steal the clapper. The clapper was once lost for 15 years until it finally showed up at a professors house.

Students can get paid for research and also get credit hours. If students want to get involved in research all they have to do is talk to their professors and see what opportunities are out there.
question
Residence Areas
answer
Residence halls are kept secure via card swipe boxes outside the building. Residents can only swipe into their own building. The doors can not be propped open or an alarm will sound. Additionally, residents have their own physical key to get into their room. So if you have a friend over you will need to go down and let them into building. There are Auxiliary Police Officers that check the building security from dusk-to-dawn to ensure there are no issues with security or building. Each hall contains community bathrooms, which are cleaned everyday except Sunday, and laundry facilities on every other floor. You pay for the laundry with LionCash on your ID card. LionCash is a debit card on your PSU ID. Student or parents can deposit money on your ID from online and this this LionCash can be used on campus or at more than 200 merchants downtown. In addition to LionCash, students who live on campus are required to get a meal plan. The meal plan levels are set up as dining dollars, not swipes per day, and vary from one to six. We like to call the level one plan the ballerina diet and the level six diet the linebacker diet. But don't worry most people go with the level three. At any point until the last few weeks of the semester, you can drop your meal plan level and be reimbursed for the difference. If it is the fall, your leftover points will carry over the the spring, but not from spring to fall. There is are Residence Assistants, or RAs, on every or every other floor. RAs are upperclassman who are responsible for keeping the residents safe as well as provide information for students who live on campus. They are a resource for anything residents need from conflict management to health resources. My RA freshman year was a huge help to me. Throughout the year he would set up dinners or groups to go to a sports game. It was a great way to get to know my floor better and we were super close. A lot of those people are still my best friends today. Each residence area has a commons building. Each commons has a 24/7 computer lab, commons desk, a res com, which is IT support for computers and cell phones, and different food options. At the commons desk is where students can pick up their packages, temporary PSU IDs, and a copy of their key if they lose it. The different food options in each commons includes an all you can eat buffet to a-la-carte, all commons also have a convenience store for grab and go purchases. The date you accept admissions Penn State can process room assignments. Any acceptances after April 1st have a higher chance of getting supplemental housing. Roommate requests must be mutual. Both students need to accept before April 1st or both have selected supplemental. There is no matching survey but there are facebook groups.
question
Safety
answer
There are three levels of police at Penn State. Auxiliary Police are students that patrol campus making sure everything is safe, residence halls are locked, and no suspicious activity. University Park Police are sworn officers who patrol campus and receive additional training to work in a college environment. State College police are sworn officers who patrol campus and downtown. We have blue lights on campus. There are over 80 of them and have less than 90 second response time if activated. There are PSU alerts which are text alerts to student's cell phones in case of emergency. Parents can also sign up to receive texts. There is also a safe walk number which is 865-Walk. It is a free service for students to call if they do not wish to walk home alone. They will be escorted by Auxiliary or Campus Police Officer.
question
Sample Room
answer
Now we are entering East Halls where we will see an example of a typical residence hall room. East halls is the largest residence area at Penn State and the second largest in the world. Can anyone name the largest? Moscow State University but no one is Russian there anytime soon... Each residence hall room contains two beds, two desks, a micro-fridge, and this procrastination box here. The procrastination box contains a cable hook up, which includes 120 SD channels and 95 HD channels along with numerous music channels. It also has an ethernet port, although the campus does have its own wifi which can be accessed anywhere on campus. The differences between this room and normal residence hall rooms are that residence hall rooms are one foot bigger in each direction, you can never enter a real room from the outside, the closets go from wall to door and floor to ceiling, and the normal rooms have a light on either side of the room to allow one roommate to sleep while the other is awake studying. The date a student accepts his or her offer of admission is used to process room assignments. Students who accept after April 1st have a higher chance of being assigned to supplemental housing. When requesting a roommate it much be mutual. Students who both accept the offer of admission before April 1 will be assigned together in regular housing in a traditional residence hall. If one student has accepted the offer of admission before April 1, but the other student accepted after April 1, the students must decide to either be assigned together in supplemental housing or forgo the mutual roommate request and be assigned based on each students' individual preferences and when the offer was accepted. Students who both accept the offer of admission after April 1st will be assigned together in supplemental housing.
