Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. , also known by his stage name, Lil Wayne, has had many achievements in his life. He has recorded many hit songs and released very popular albums that leave fans crazy for his next creation. He has inspired many people to start a career in music. I decided to research Lil Wayne because I wanted to learn more about him and how his career started. Dwayne was born on September 27, 1982 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in a neighborhood called Hollygrove, which was one of the poorest neighborhoods in New Orleans (Lil Wayne.

Biography, Par. 1). It’s amazing to think that he went from living in a very poor area to being one of the worlds’ best rappers. Dwayne started rapping and creating rhymes at a very young age of 8.

When he first started rapping, his very first rapper name was “Gangsta D”. He changed the name to Lil Wayne because he wanted to drop the “D” from Dwayne to separate himself from an absent father (Jeffries 1). Dwayne never gave up his dream. When he was 11 years old, he met up with Bryan and Slim Williams, the founders of Cash Money Records.

In 1993, Dwayne released his very first recording with Cash Money Records. It was called “True Stories” and he performed it with another young artist named B. G. (Lil Wayne. Biography, Par. 4). At 12 years old, Dwayne shot himself in the chest with a gun. He claimed it to be his mother’s gun. “It was like a chopper hit me. But the bullet went straight through, and I bounced back in two weeks. ”

When Dwayne released, Tha Carter III, in 2008, it hit the top of the rap, hip-hop and pop charts (Lil Wayne. Biography Par. 10). More than 1 million of Tha Carter III copies were sold during the first week of its release. Some of the artists that were featured on Tha Carter III were Static Major, T-Pain, Jay-z, Babyface, Robin Thicke, Busta Rhymes and Juelz Santana. Dwayne won multiple Grammies. The first one he won was Best Rap Album for Tha Carter III (Adaso, Par. 1).

The second one was Best Rap Song for Lollipop. The third one was Best Rap Solo Performance for A Milli. The fourth one he o. ne was Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for Swagga Like Us, shared with T. I. , Jay-Z, and Kanye

West (Lil Wayne, Biography, Par. 11-12). In 2006, Dwayne was arrested in Georgia for drug possession. He was arrested again in January of 2008 in Arizona for drug related charges. In 2009 Dwayne signed rapper Bow Wow to his label. Dwayne also established the One Family Foundation to help urban youth. He is working to rebuild the athletic fields at his old school.

Dwayne released his newest album called Tha Carter IV in 2011. Lil Wayne achieved many goals in his life. He also got in trouble with the law a couple times. He had a dream and he followed it and kept trying till it came true. Lil Wayne is one of my many role models. I wonder where Lil Wayne will go in the next couple of years.
