As the Moraine Park Technical College Code of Conduct states: “Any conduct or communication in any form that impedes the educational process, violates the rights, or intimidates staff or students will not be tolerated”. The MPTC Code of Conduct also states that plagiarism is “seeking to claim credit for the work or efforts of another without authorization by citation.” I know now that it was wrong for me to turn in these assignments as my own, and without proper use of citation. The HIT Student Handbook states in its civility principle that the student should “complete academic work honestly and in accordance with instructions.
Plagiarism, unauthorized work sharing, use of unauthorized devices or reference materials, cheating or other failure to adhere to instructions for examinations or assignments is a MPTC violation and subject to penalt
...ies.” In addition, The American Health Information Management Association Code of Ethics 2.5 states that “a health information management professional shall take responsibility and credit, including authorship credit, only for work one actually performs, or to which one contributed. Honestly acknowledge the work of and the contributions made by others verbally or written, such as in publication.” My act of plagiarism should not and will not be tolerated, and again, I take full responsibility. It was wrong of me to behave the way that I did. There is no excuse for my behavior. I sincerely regret it ever happened and I am willing to do whatever it takes to correct the situation.
In regard to the impact of academic dishonesty for my fellow students, I believe that my actions are not fair to them. It may discourage them from studying hard, knowing tha
those with academic dishonesty are achieving grades that they themselves cannot earn. Another impact of academic dishonesty is the potential of employers hiring the unskilled student/ employee. This gets in the way of hiring the right person for the job, and students finding a job after graduation. It also causes a feeling of mistrust, especially in the instance of group projects or collaboration between students.
Another student may feel they can not trust me to create my own work, and therefore may not want to work together on a project. Ethical ways to deal with this situation should it rise again include removal from the program, dismissal from the class for the remainder of the class session, and probation. The Moraine Park Student Conduct Code states “a student placed on probation would be allowed to remain enrolled at Moraine Park under the condition that he/she complies with all college conduct expectations or regulations or with other designated standards of conduct. Probation may include a loss of certain privileges and shall not exceed two semesters.” Removal from the program and dismissal from the class are also ethical options because they take away the education that the student is seeking. If the student can not get the education that the student needs, that student can not obtain their certification, and therefore pursue their career. Once more, I am genuinely sorry for this act of plagiarism and ask for your forgiveness.
