question
Is this a legitimate organization?
answer
It is legit, it was established in 2001. It is the largest leadership honor society in the country. We have chapters at many of the top National Universities including UC Berkeley and Penn State. There are chapters at both public and private small colleges. We have recently established chapters at Colorado College and Colorado-Mesa.
question
What is the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS)?
answer
Largest leadership society, 500 chapters exist on the nation with half a million members. The mission is to build leaders who make a better world. Helps students discover/achieve the goals. There is no nation GPA requirement and this is involvement based.
question
What are the problems or challenges facing our campus?`
answer
Many honor societies only benefit highest academic achieving students. The students who are engaged are the same student leaders who are involved with everything. Students not engaged in campus life leave the campus. Schools budgets prevent speakers. Faculty have little time to support student organizations . Limited opportunities with low GPA.
question
How is the society different than other honor societies on campus? Would serve as competition?
answer
Honor societies can be department-only and have a GPA requirement. The society allows chapter leaders to work with the national office to decide on the GPA criteria. I myself have a 2.8 GPA and get the opportunity to be apart of this great society. The society requires students to participate and learn in the involvement-based program to be inducted.
question
How can the society solve the problems and challenges facing our campus?
answer
We work with campus leaders to get students based on their leadership potential. The society helps benefit students grades. Our society is 100-300 students on average allowing for more participation, meaning students can participate in activities they have not been involved in before. Currently 13% of freshmen leave after the first year, I plan to stay because I want to start up this program, however I know many people leaving campus after this year, the society can help with getting students involved and to even increase student's GPA on campus. The free programming from the society is no cost to the school, they are also free to participate in. We also help maximize the time of administrators.
question
What are the steps to induction once a student joins your organization?
answer
Eight events for students to be inducted. These include orientation, interactive leadership training day, 3 different speaker broadcasts, 3 success networking team meetings.
question
What is orientation?
answer
Student members learn about the society, steps to induction, membership benefits, and a calendar of events. Students will also participate in a communication skills activity called DiSC. This activity helps students learn their own communication style and the other types of communication styles.
question
What is Leadership Training Day?
answer
This is a three hour workshop for students to participate in activities they can apply to their own leadership principles. We use a video about student leadership development. It was created based on Social change model, 5 practices of Exemplary Leadership, Servant Leadership Model, and 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
question
What is a Speaker Broadcast event?
answer
Students participate in speaker events from the nation's leading speakers (some of which would traditionally charge 100,000 for speaking). The society provides six speaker broadcasts per year and are open to anyone on campus. These speakers cover topics including success, leadership, and how to make positive change in the world. Students will walk away with action steps to help transform in their own lives.
question
How are the Speaker Broadcasts interactive?
answer
The speaker broadcasts are filmed live from a host school and streamed across the nation. Each chapter will have a large auditorium with a large screen for students to watch, listen, and interact. Broadcasts can be live or on demand. The broadcasts will have trivia and polls using social media, students are able to ask questions directly to the speaker by sending in videos of us asking questions and will be played directly on screen.
question
What are Success Networking Teams?
answer
At the end of Leadership Training Day, students are put into groups of 6-8, called Success Networking Teams. They meet three times in consecutive weeks. Each person is to create their own goal that is 'SMART' (specific, measure, achieve, reward, time). Each member gives ideas and suggestions to other students on how to achieve their goal. Each member walks away from the meeting with a commitment to action. Advisor or SNT Coaches review each goal and action steps and provide feedback.
question
What is an Induction Ceremony?
answer
Students are recognized and celebrate the achievement of becoming inducted members with family members and close friends. Many ceremonies are elaborate with special guest and awards given to the university president, deans of students, faculty and community members. After students are inducted, they can receive National Engaged Leader awards: 3 more speaker broadcasts, 3 SNTS, 5 hours of service. Students can serve as peer facilitators in SNTs. Can serve on Executive Board, community, social, or fundraisers.
question
What does support for the National Office look like?
answer
The National Office had a dedicated team of employees who assist student members from the invitation process to the induction ceremony. The society receives a full-time Chapter Support Manager from the National Office. They provide training to the advisor and E-board, they have weekly meetings with the Student President, they walk through planning and execution of events, and they are a customized support based on your needs. The Chapter Support Manager acts as another Advisor to ensure success here on campus.
question
What are the costs associated with the leadership program? Why does the Society charge dues?
answer
The society has a one-time lifetime membership due that is a fee of $85, this fee covers all services and support the student receives as a member. The chapter dues are $2,800 and they cover the speaker broadcasts series, promotional materials, technology, and support provided to each campus for the leadership program. The value of the speaker broadcasts are between $15,000 to more than $100,000 for a single speaking engagement. The society provides a breakdown of where the $2,800 chapter dues and the one-time $85 membership goes. Would you like a copy?
question
Who is responsible for the dues? How will you fundraise for those dues?
answer
The society has provided the society with a grant to pilot the program for free during the first year. There is no financial risk to start the program; the school, department, and chapter leaders are NOT responsible to pay the annual dues after the first year. The chapter leaders have the authority to discontinue the program at any time. I will be working with a team of students to create and implement a fundraising plan for the chapter. The society provides many resources to make the program self sustaining. The programs are the society pillars (which is a program that outlines 10 best practices for chapters, if we follow six our of 10 of the practices, the chapter earns a $1 ,400 credit toward credit dues), as well as the chapter credit program (the chapter receives $5 for every student who joins and an additional $5 for every student inducted, these funds can be used to pay for the chapter dues as well as programming expenses), another program is Fundraising Templates (the society provides instructions on the most effective fundraiser just in case the annual fee is not covered in the pillars and chapter credit program), another program is Grants (the society is a mission-based organization. If a chapter is following the best practices but is faced with a limited funding to cover the dues, the chapter can apply to cover the cost).
question
What is your role as a student president?
answer
My roles as president includes establish and govern a society chapter on my campus, find an advisor and find an executive board, get registered as a student organization and/or receive sponsorship from a department, work with my advisor and the national office to invite students to join, and plan and schedule events.
question
What are my primary responsibilities as an advisor?
answer
The advisors responsibilities include overseeing the chapter and serve as a mentor, ensure that the chapter operates within the guidelines and principles of the institution, serve as liaison between the National Office and the university to provide the materials and information necessary to send invitations, and they can review and approve S
question
What are some benefits I receive if I decide to be an advisor?
answer
You will gain recognition by contribution to the institutional goals and strategy plan of the university, developing students academically, personally and professionally, networking with faculty and administrators from other schools in conference calls, attend regional conferences with free registration, and the ability to apply for advisor only scholarships.
question
I'm too busy to get involved with this program.
answer
I completely understand, my goal is to work to get a team of coadvisors to spread the responsibilities. Also, I am responsible for doing all the work and planning the events with my executive board. I, along with future presidents, also meet with our National office weekly for 30 minutes for added support. The average time commitment for an advisor is a minimum of four hours a month!, which is less than one hour a week. It can be up to 10 hours per month depending on how engaged you decide to be with the society. If you can't attend all the events, can you attend the most important ones including Orientation and Induction? Will you participate in executive board meetings with me? Would you like to give feedback on Success Networking Team submissions on students' goals? Please let me know how much time you are willing to commit to?
