Today, abortion is a major problem concerning women because for years it has been said that abortion should not be legal. Many people feel aborting an unwanted child, or killing an unwanted child should be against the law. A reason they might bring up is that “every single life has value” (BBC). Although this sounds reasonable, many people don't know the reason why a woman would go through with an abortion. I feel that a woman has a moral right to decide what to do with their bodies. For that reason, on the topic of Abortion, I am pro-choice.

Before a person decides abortions, they should know exactly what it is. The dictionary defines abortion as the termination of a pregnancy by removing or expelling the fetus or embryo from the uterus before it is ready for birth.

ot everyone can receive abortions. If a woman were too far along in her pregnancy she would be considered unable to have an abortion. Often, doctors will recommend girls under the age of 16, and over the age of 35 to not have an abortion at those ages. In the Sciencedirect article “Abortion Stigma: A Reconceptualization of Constituents, Causes, and Consequences”, Alison Norris mentions that some women do not think ahead of their actions. When talking about the consequences of abortion, Norris says, “Although females may not notice it, but when they do the act of abortion, consequences and causes will soon follow” (sciencedirect.com). The fact is that the process might prevent them from ever having more children.

have a say in deciding for another person. Many of these individuals who attempt to decide for women are many legislatures who are men, who would never have to make that personal decision of having an abortion themselves. We must always remember, “Women have a moral right to decide what to do with their body” (BBC). Women have fought hard to be able to get the right to vote, be counted as human beings without a man attached and the right to make decisions over their bodies. By taking away the rights of women to make decisions about their bodies would make a negative impact on the progress made by the women’s movement. “The right to abortion is an important vital factor in gender equality” (BBC).

Finally, not everyone gets an abortion for the same reason. Some women did not protect themselves properly before engaging in the act of sexual intercourse, become pregnant and explore the option of abortion. Some women have fetuses diagnosed with birth defects, and choose to abort them to avoid the hardships of raising a child with special medical needs. Then, there are those women who were abused, raped, and got pregnant, and had to abort the baby because they were traumatized, or because there was a lack of a father figure. Some women may not think of the causes of getting an abortion, but some need it to live a normal life. So preventing or “banning abortion risks women to perform illegal abortion” (sciencedirect.com).

Ultimately, I feel it should be a woman's decision whether or not she wants to keep her baby. I don’t condone the fact that many women do it

because they were careless and risky when it came to having sex, but it should be an option for those women who were raped and abused. Therefore on the topic of Abortion, I am pro-choice because a woman should be able to make their own decisions.
