Annie Sullivan: taught her how to write and read Braille, taught her how to use the manual language to communicate, spent entire life with Helen and was basically her caregiver and source of income Alexander Graham Bell: lifelong friendship, helped to improve life for the deaf, suggested that Kellers write to Perkins Institute for the Blind, which supplied Helen with Annie Kate Adams Keller: Helen's mom who refused to have Helen sent to an institution and never gave up on her daughter. Always believed in her abilities

-fought for women's rights -held fundraisers and raised money for people suffering from deafblindness -lobbied for laws for the education and protection of the deaf and blind -brought entertainment and information through performances (vaudeville, 2 movies) and lecture tours -grew as a person from a child who threw tantrums to a mature woman who fought for other's rights and became an influential writer and humanitarian

-broke cultural traditions -people who had disabilities including deafblindness tended to live in seclusion -they shied away from society because they were not \"normal\" -she managed to obtain an education and have a good life -tradition of being a woman also caused her to want to get married and maybe have children

-persistence and perseverance: managed to graduate from college even though it was really hard for her to study since it took so long to read books; eventually learned how to communicate with help of Anne Sullivan -loyalty: remained with Annie throughout her life and considered her as an advisor, mentor, and friend; listened to her family and respected their opinions (almost got married) -smart: very studious, witty, great writer -independent: even though she needed Anne for translations, she did many things as an individual like writing books and becoming successful

-stubborn: she had to have it her way, she fought with Anne initially because she didn't want others telling her what to do -impulsive: she did whatever she wanted, and never really thoroughly planned her life out

-very private person, doesn't let just anyone into her life. has quiet exterior but very feisty within -didn't have many close friends -somewhat social since she did share certain aspects of her life including her disabilities with many people -advocated her political views and other social issues loudly and clearly -privacy was a good thing since she needed some part of herself to stay with her, yet it was bad since she did not have the opportunity to personally know many people

-provided an inspiration for people with disabilities that they too can be successful and thrive -advocated for women's rights (now women can vote) -helped fight for laws that help people with disabilities so it is fair for everyone
