Driving down the polished, well-defined streets of Miami, Karen let out a sigh of exhaustion following a lengthy countryside excursion. The environment was cloudy and the air was invigorating, yet she couldn't shake her frustration at the inability of individuals to coexist peacefully.
The sounds of her two cherished individuals resounded in her mind. On a previous occasion, her mother and boyfriend, Drake, had argued yet again. It marked the seventh occasion on which they had clashed since she introduced Drake to her family. This instance emerged because Drake had become intoxicated at a bar and entangled with the police. Karen had grown accustomed to his carefree nature, but she hoped he would abandon it. However, she believed that whilst she could perceive why her mother became mildly incensed, there was no reason for her to become excessivel
...y enraged.
Although the individual has a record of multiple incarcerations, past drug use, and a rebellious reputation, Karen recognizes their transformation and that they are no longer the same person.
Upon parking her black Lexus under her two-story house, Karen was unsure about the morality of her actions. When she entered the dim and hot house, she started sweating and called out for her mother in a hushed tone by saying "Mum?"
Without receiving a response, Karen entered the living room which was dimmer than the hallway. Upon hanging her coat, she could hear the gentle crackling of a fire.
'Why is there complete silence?' Karen silently wondered as she noticed a motionless figure sitting on the lounge chair. She tiptoed closer and asked, "Mum?" The person turned their head and responded with a firm, chilly voice, "Yes, dear?"
Relieved, Karen exhaled and inquired, "Are you okay?"
Her mother spoke with bitterness, inviting Karen to have a conversation. Karen sat on a stool next to the lounge chair and expressed her dismissal through her eyes, anticipating what would be said next. Her mother calmly declared that she was forbidding Karen from seeing him, but the anger in her voice simmered.
Karen's anger grew evident as she tightened her jaw and retorted with a piercing gaze, "Do not instruct me." Nevertheless, her mother rebuked, affirming, "I possess knowledge of your best interest. That imbecile will merely lead to destruction."
Karen vehemently proclaims her age of seventeen and assertively states that she has full authority over her life. However, her mother promptly reminds her that as a parent, she is the one in charge. Her mother encourages Karen to act maturely and rationally when making decisions.
Karen's mother spoke venomously, ordering her spoiled daughter to go to her room and adding insult to injury by insulting her. Despite Karen's frustration and anger, she knew it was futile to argue with her mother in this state. Quietly, she murmured that her mother couldn't keep her from seeing her love interest, wiping a sweaty brow before storming off and slamming the door shut. Meanwhile, Drake wondered where Karen was on the phone.
Karen glanced around the bright living room before sharing her frustration with Drake. "She's gone," she muttered, exhaling in exasperation. "It's just too much, Drake. I can't handle this anymore." As Karen recounted the argument with her mother from the day before, she explained how her mother had forbidden her from seeing Drake. "She can't control who I see,"
Drake interjected fiercely. Karen regretted sharing the story with him, as calming him down was no easy task when he was angry. Despite her nerves, Karen remained too aggravated to care.
Karen expressed her anger towards someone who made her feel like a child. She claimed that she could even murder that person. Although there was no response from Drake on the other end, Karen heard his breathing. She called out his name repeatedly until he finally responded absent-mindedly.
"Where were you?" Karen asked angrily. Drake responded with "I was here," but explained that he had to leave because of work. Karen rolled her eyes and bid him farewell before ending the call.
Karen was experiencing a mix of frustration and anger due to her companion's odd behavior. Compounding this feeling was her dispute with the person she believed to be her parent, which was particularly frustrating given it was Valentine's Day. Karen's contemplation was disrupted by a disturbance coming from the shrubbery nearby. She left the house in a fit of rage and slammed the front door shut behind her.
Karen abruptly halted and questioned the sound she had just perceived. She quickly proceeded towards her vehicle, pondering the possibility of embarking on another lengthy journey. "My Valentine's Day is not unfolding as I anticipated," she muttered to herself.
As a result of Drake's hectic schedule, she spent the entire day at home feeling sad. Regrettably, her mother's actions made matters worse as Karen quickly left the house with a soft screech in her car.
Upon arriving at her destination, Karen let out a loud yawn indicating a sense of satisfaction. As she stepped onto the curb, her attention was
captured by the front door before gradually shifting towards the gift she had brought for her mum - a red and blue wrapped present. Karen's earlier dispute with her mother seemed to have dissipated as she looked at the present with a newfound appreciation.
Upon entering the house, Karen rehearsed how she would give her gift to her mother while taking a deep breath. Surprisingly, the house appeared vacant and Karen felt puzzled as she searched the living room. After checking the ground floor, Karen hurried upstairs and opened the guest room door quickly.
With a quick and irregular heartbeat, Karen searched the room with her eyes, thinking out loud that what she was looking for was not there. Making her way to her mother's bedroom, she carefully inspected the spacious red velvet sofa and mused to herself, "Hmm."
Karen expressed her frustration and acknowledged that she would have to give something to her friend later. While heading towards her room, Karen paused to stretch her back, experiencing relief from not having done so in a while.
Despite her physical exhaustion, Karen smiled contentedly as she carelessly closed the door and walked to her bed. Yawning and rubbing her eyes, she remained upbeat.
Karen considered changing for bed and approached her closet. Upon opening the doors, she was struck with shock and staggered backwards, ultimately covering her mouth as tears flowed down her cheeks. The silence in the room was deadly as she initially paused motionless on the bed.
Karen doubled over and vomited onto the Persian carpet while exclaiming "No..."
Whispering with bulging eyes and a pale face, she glanced toward the door before slowly returning her gaze to
the closet. Inside, she saw her mother's body, throat slashed and suspended with red rope. Despite the lack of decay, Karen knew the blood was still warm and fresh as she clutched her heart, attempting to quell its pounding.
Karen saw that her mother's body was covered in cuts with an unusual shape and blood was dripping from them. Overwhelmed with emotions and confusion, Karen cried uncontrollably while pulling her hair. She noticed a repulsive yellow card inside her mother's mouth and shook as she approached the corpse. With a trembling hand, she tugged at the dry card.
Struggling to control her sobs, Karen attempted to concentrate on the illegible penmanship as she read the note. Inevitably, the card slipped from her grasp, triggering a frenzied outburst.
